Learning in any environment has undergone major changes in recent times. Many of these changes are closely related or are similar to processes or solutions found traditionally in Free/Libre and Open Source (FLOSS) environments: peer to peer relationships, telematic support, use of new technologies, etc. [1] The purpose of this workshop is to bring together free software experts to discuss challenges that we face in the educational world at present and and that we will face in the future and how they can be undertaken from a FLOSS perspective. A public call for papers has been made resulting in various contributions, as follows: Based on this contributions and on the over 20 registered participants, a series of topics will be discussed, and conclusions and remarks will be collected and published. Since the beginning of the discipline, eLearning has been about innovation. New software, systems, contents and tools are being created and experimented with and in constant evolution. But when systems, contents and tools become successful and part of the regular infrastructure of educational institutions, interoperability becomes an issue. Systems that are consolidated and regularly used need to be able to interoperate with new ones. And the new tendencies need to fit within the current infrastructure. This paper states how several research and development projects with heterogeneous funding sources and locations worldwide, gathered together to find a solution to this common problem, providing open specifications and standards, plus Free/Libre, Open Source reference implementations.
While the need for skilled specialists in the area of Free Technologies is rising considerably in recent years, this fact is not very much reflected in most academic programmes in the domains of Computer Science, Software Engineering and Information Systems. A few full master programmes exist, but extending the current programmes requires investment and collaboration. This workshop proposes to discuss about the foundations and particularities such common curriculum could entail. Building this in common promises several advantages, such as the reduction of costs by sharing its burden, connection to specialists in the field and real needs from learners. It also promises to facilitate the possibilities for mutual recognition, double or even joint degrees. The Free Knowledge Institute will host this workshop and expects several participants to advance the discussion together and define concrete actions for realising missing bits. The emergence of Free Technologies such as Free Software and Open Standards has led to an increasing demand for skilled specialists, while few academic programmes exists to prepare people. The Free Technology Academy (FTA) was set up to address this need. In this article we will in particular show the need for shared development and shared quality assurance. The authors sustain that lessons can be learnt from such shared efforts, which are particularly relevant for the advance of Open Educational Resources in general, their move from inhouse produced and run educational objects towards peer produced materials and online learning networks. The FTA shows how this can be done in the field of Computer Science and invites interested participants to join the debate and participate in its multiple open futures.
The decision to publish educational materials openly and under free licenses brings up the challenge of doing it in a sustainable way. Some lessons can be learned from the business models for production, maintenance and distribution of Free and Open Source Software. The Free Technology Academy (FTA) has taken on these challenges and has implemented some of these models. We briefly review the FTA educational programme, methodologies and organisation, and see to which extent these models are proving successful in the case of the FTA.
More and more people and organisations embrace Free Software (FS) and Open Standards (OS). However a lack of knowledge holds back their massive adoption. The Free Technology Academy will address this by setting up a virtual campus offering course modules on these topics to become a showcase of a virtual campus based on FS, OS and the use of Open Educational Resources. This distance learning programme will enable IT professionals, students, teachers and decision makers to upgrade knowledge and acquire relevant skills on free technologies. The FTA is realised by an international consortium and welcomes other interested parties to join the network.
Aunque la difusión del software libre y los estándares abiertos sigue creciendo a un buen ritmo, su cuota de uso aún se mantiene limitada. Entre las razones que justifican esta limitación en su uso cabe mencionar la ausencia de profesorado cualificado y la falta de materiales adecuados para diferentes niveles formativos. Además, el avance en la implantación del software libre y los estándares abiertos es un factor clave en el desarrollo tecnológico y económico de la Unión Europea e Iberoamérica, entre otros territorios. Para intentar cubrir las carencias mencionadas, un consorcio formado por siete grupos de diversas nacionalidades ha iniciado un proyecto para desarrollar la plataforma SELF (Science, Education and Learning in Freedom;) que permitirá, por un lado, obtener materiales para la formación del software libre y los estándares abiertos y, por el otro, constituirse como herramienta para la elaboración cooperativa de nuevos contenidos. Este proyecto ha recibido financiación del VI Programa Marco de la Comisión Europea y en este artículo se presentan sus características principales.
The advance in the implantation of Free Software and Open Standards is a key factor for the economical and technological development of different regions in the European Union and other areas. Although the dissemination of Free Software and Open Standards is growing at a maintained rate, their usage is still far from a prominent position. Among the reasons which justify this limited growth, the lack of qualified teachers and appropriate materials for different educational levels deserve careful attention. In order to mitigate these deficiencies, a consortium formed by seven groups of different nationalities has initiated a project to develop the SELF (Science, Education and Learning in Freedom) platform which is both a material repository to centralise contents for the teaching of free software and open standards and a production facility for the collaborative creation of new contents. This project has received financial support within the 6 th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Commission. This paper presents an overview of the main features of the SELF platform and its different development stages.
