PurposeThis study aims to examine how entrepreneurial resilience drives product innovation, a critical market-facing outcome in entrepreneurial marketing - under conditions of technological disruption and environmental uncertainty. Understanding this relationship is essential for firms seeking to maintain competitiveness through continuous innovation.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on broaden-and-build theory, this study employs a quantitative-dominant design, supplemented by illustrative qualitative insights. Quantitative data were collected from 252 Chinese entrepreneurs, and qualitative insights were obtained through in-depth interviews. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed framework.FindingsThe results support a sequential mediation model in which challenge stressors and taking charge behavior translate entrepreneurial resilience into product innovation. Moreover, self-transcendence values positively moderate this process.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is based on cross-sectional data from a single-country context, which may limit generalizability. Future research could adopt longitudinal or cross-cultural designs to further validate the findings.Practical implicationsEntrepreneurial firms should foster resilience and create environments that promote positive stress framing and proactive behaviors. Aligning innovation strategies with founders' value systems can further enhance innovation performance.Originality/valueThis study identifies a psychological pathway through which resilience contributes to market-oriented innovation, deepening understanding of how psychological capabilities shape entrepreneurial innovation under uncertainty.
PurposeThis study aims to examine the effects of co-founders' responses to failure on entrepreneurs' recovery from failure.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses time-lagged survey data collected from 203 matched Chinese entrepreneur-co-founder dyads and interviews with four pairs of entrepreneurs and co-founders.FindingsThe results indicate that co-founders' tolerance of failure has a stronger positive effect on entrepreneurs' recovery from failure than co-founders' reflections on failure. The interaction between co-founders' tolerance of failure and reflection on failure positively influences entrepreneurs' recovery from failure. Two emotion regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, moderate the relationship between co-founders' responses to failure and entrepreneurs' recovery from failure. The implications of the findings for research and practice are discussed.Originality/valueBy linking co-founders' responses to failure with entrepreneurs' recovery from failure, this study enriches the antecedents of entrepreneurs' recovery from failure from the perspective of co-founders and contributes to the evolving emotion regulation literature and application of social cognitive theory in failure recovery.
Purpose The assimilation of external knowledge by gatekeepers plays a pivotal role in rejuvenating corporate knowledge, thus fostering organizational success. This study aims to delve into the function of gatekeepers in disseminating knowledge and enhancing knowledge transfer performance through a motivational lens. It investigates whether gatekeepers inherently disseminate knowledge or if certain motivations drive their actions. Particularly, this research centers on the influence of autonomous motivation (intrinsic acceptance) and controlled motivation (external pressure) on knowledge transfer performance, asserting that understanding both motivations is crucial for grasping the intricacies of the behavior-performance nexus. Design/methodology/approach A structured questionnaire survey was used to select a total of 24 firms of three different sizes, large, medium and small, in the provinces of Hunan, Guangdong, Shandong and Zhejiang, China, to conduct a survey of knowledge gatekeepers, and 321 valid questionnaires were finally obtained. The study analyzed the proposed hypotheses through structural equation modeling. Findings The controlled motivation of gatekeepers negatively affects knowledge transfer performance, while autonomous motivation has a positive impact. Additionally, this study unveils that work effort serves as a mediator in the correlation between motivation for knowledge dissemination and knowledge transfer performance. Furthermore, the capability for knowledge transfer positively moderates the link between work effort and knowledge transfer performance. Remarkably, the mediating effect of work effort becomes more pronounced when gatekeepers possess higher knowledge transfer capability. Originality/value This research contributes to the knowledge gatekeeping theory and the literature on knowledge transfer by examining the connection between knowledge gatekeepers’ motivation to disseminate knowledge and knowledge transfer performance. It challenges the conventional belief that gatekeepers consistently share knowledge and provides new perspectives on the mechanisms linking motivation and performance. By doing so, this study helps organizations boost employees’ job autonomy and improve knowledge transfer performance.
Achieving green sustainable development in enterprises is a key objective of implementing the green tax law. This study uses panel data from Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares in China and applies difference-in-differences (DID), difference-in-difference-in-difference (DDD), and dual machine learning models to analyze the impact of the environmental protection tax on the resilience of enterprises' green development. The empirical findings show that the green tax law significantly enhances the resilience of enterprises in their green development efforts. Furthermore, the study identifies the mechanisms through which the green tax law influences this resilience, emphasizing the roles of innovation and environmental focus. Specifically, R&D investment and green awareness amplifies the positive effects of the green tax law on enterprises' green development resilience. Additionally, the impact of the green tax law varies across industries and levels of policy support, with the law having a more substantial effect on non-heavily polluting industries and in regions with stronger policy support. This study offers an objective assessment of the green tax law's impact and provides valuable insights into how legal aspect may contribute to global efforts to address environmental degradation and promote green sustainable development.
Entrepreneurial resilience is of great significance for founders to recover from setbacks and advance the entrepreneurial process. Prior studies of resilience have explored the antecedents from the perspective of founders' characteristics, ignoring the entrepreneurial co-founders. Entrepreneurial co-founders, the founders' closest partners, influence the construction of entrepreneurial resilience. Based on social support theory, this study explored the effects of entrepreneurial co-founders' support (i.e., emotional support and instrumental support) on founders' entrepreneurial resilience. Through 103 co-founder and founder dyad samples in the high-tech industry, the results showed that: (1) compared with instrumental support from co-founders, emotional support from co-founders had a more significant effect on founders' entrepreneurial resilience; (2) perceived digital technology moderated the relationship between co-founders' support and founders' entrepreneurial resilience. Compared with low-level perceived digital technology, high-level perceived digital technology strengthened the influences of co-founders' support (i.e., emotional support and instrumental support) on founders' entrepreneurial resilience; and (3) perceived failure-tolerant climate moderated the relationship between co-founders' instrumental support and founders' entrepreneurial resilience, but not the linkage between co-founders' emotional support with founders' entrepreneurial resilience. Compared with a low-level perceived failure-tolerant climate, a high-level perceived failure-tolerant climate reinforced the influence of co-founders' instrumental support on founders' entrepreneurial resilience. From the perspective of entrepreneurial co-founders, we identified the driving mechanisms of entrepreneurial resilience in the digital era, and provided theoretical and practical references for entrepreneurs to construct entrepreneurial resilience.
Firms’ public communication on social media during disasters can benefit both disaster response efficiency and the perception of the corporate image. Despite its importance, limited guidelines are available to inform firms’ disaster communication strategies. The current study examines firms’ communication on social media in various disasters and how it impacts public engagement. We employ a novel natural language processing (NLP) approach, Semantic Projection with Active Retrieval (SPAR), to analyze Facebook posts made by Russell 3000 firms between 2009 and 2022 concerning various disasters. We show that firm communication can be measured based on two dimensions derived from the Competing Values Framework (CVF): internal versus external and stable versus flexible. We find that social media messages that emphasize operational continuity (internal/stable-oriented) are more popular during biological disasters. By contrast, messages that stress innovations and adaptations to disasters (external/flexible-oriented) elicit more engagement in weather-related disasters. The study offers a framework to characterize and guide firms’ design of disaster communication on social media in different disaster contexts. Our SPAR method is also available to firms to analyze their social media data and uncover the underlying patterns in communication across different contexts.
In recent years, the rapid development of new retail has promoted the growth of the fresh food e-commerce industry. More and more fresh food e-commerce enterprises are selling their products through platforms similar to JD Daojia, and there are also platform-based, new retail-based operation modes. In this context, it is particularly important to compare the operation modes of fresh food e-commerce and study the coordination mechanisms of fresh food e-commerce supply chains to improve the overall benefits of the supply chain. This paper constructs a dual-channel supply chain consisting of fresh food e-commerce enterprises and fresh food e-commerce platforms. Based on the consideration of the input of fresh preservation efforts, it compares and analyzes the operation modes of platform-based and new retail-based fresh food e-commerce, and studies the coordination problems of platform-based e-commerce supply chains.
The successful implementation of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is significantly predicated on establishing customer trust, a challenge particularly accentuated in mainland China due to its distinct business and legal environment and a noted high failure rate of ERP projects. Whereas contracts and transaction-specific investments are common strategies to build this trust, their effectiveness remains contested in the existing literature. Specifically, the underlying mechanisms through which detailed contracts influence trust are still not clearly understood. To address these gaps, our study employs signaling theory to conceptualize a model that elucidates how contract completeness, vendor contract compliance, and transaction-specific investment act as trust-building signals in ERP vendor–vendee relationships within the Chinese context. Furthermore, we introduce ownership type as an additional variable, evaluating its influence in shaping customer trust. Our empirical analysis draws on data from 208 Chinese organizations engaged in ERP implementations, revealing nuanced findings. Notably, the vendor's ownership type, quantified by the degree of foreign ownership, negatively moderates both the results of contract completeness on contract compliance and the subsequent mediation effect on trust, thereby highlighting the critical influence of cultural factors. This study is among the pioneering empirical investigations into the synergistic roles of contract compliance and ownership type in mediating the relationship between contract completeness and trust. Our insights provide a robust foundation for understanding the complexities of contractual and relational governance in ERP vendor–vendee relationships, and we recommend targeted strategies for both vendors and customers to enhance trust in this critical business domain.
Based on the conservation of resource theory, we examined the relationship between team entrepreneurial resilience and entrepreneurial growth. As well, we predicted that team stressors would moderate this relationship. Three wave data were provided by 168 teams in high-tech entrepreneurial ventures in China. Results show that team entrepreneurial resilience is positively associated with entrepreneurial growth. This relationship is serial-mediated by certain cognition and behaviour. Team stressors also significantly moderated the serial-mediating effect between team entrepreneurial resilience and entrepreneurial growth. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
Drawing on the dynamic capabilities view, this study investigates the role of failure analysis capability in affecting venture goal progress in the technologically turbulent environment in which entrepreneurial failures are commonplace. Combining a three-wave time-lagged questionnaire survey (Study 1) with a qualitative interview (Study 2) on high-tech entrepreneurial ventures in China, we conclude that technological turbulence weakens the positive association between failure analysis capability and venture goal progress. However, the market knowledge depth of new ventures can be applied to mitigate the negative moderating effect of technological turbulence on the failure analysis capability-venture goal progress association. Theoretical and practical implications are derived from the above findings to guide future research.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how knowledge integration influences entrepreneurial firms' frugal innovation in the service industry. This study builds a moderated mediation framework to investigate the effect of knowledge integration on frugal innovation via entrepreneurial bricolage and under moderations of competitive intensity and government support. Design/methodology/approach This study uses a two-wave survey study among 278 entrepreneurial firms from the service industry in China. Findings The findings reveal that knowledge integration positively influences entrepreneurial firms' frugal innovation via entrepreneurial bricolage. Competitive intensity strengthens both the direct effect of knowledge integration on entrepreneurial bricolage and the indirect effects of knowledge integration on frugal innovation via entrepreneurial bricolage. Government support buffers the effect of entrepreneurial bricolage on frugal innovation but does not influence the indirect effect of knowledge integration on frugal innovation. Practical implications This study advocates for managers in entrepreneurial firms to cultivate knowledge integration to improve frugal innovation through activating entrepreneurial bricolage strategy and to pay attention to competitive intensity and government support in the transformation process from knowledge integration to frugal innovation. Originality/value While the link between knowledge integration and frugal innovation of entrepreneurial firms in the service industry remains unexplored in the fields of knowledge and innovation management, this study contributes to the knowledge and innovation management literature by exploring the mediating role of entrepreneurial bricolage based on a knowledge-based view and the moderation roles of competitive intensity and government support in this relationship.
Rice is the staple food for 2.5 billion people worldwide and most farmers depend solely on rice for their livelihood. This study estimates how paddy ecosystem elasticity and external human activity affect paddy ecosystem sustainable food supply. In particular, we analyzed how sustainable food supply is affected by three key domains of external factors—ecological factors, including the proportion of paddy Area (Are), per capita cultivated land area (Lan), and annual wastewater discharge per capita (Was); economic factors, including the agricultural economy level (Inv) and urbanization rate (Urb); and social factors, including the education of farmers (Edu) and rural medical level (Med). We use ANEV, or net paddy ecosystem services value per unit area, to assess the sustainable food supply, which not only represents the food supply quantity and quality, but also the sustainability of the food supply. Results from our panel and threshold regressions suggest that Lan and Urb have a threshold effect on paddy ANEV; Are, Was, Inv, and Edu have a linear negative correlation with ANEV; and Med has a positive linear correlation with ANEV. Based on our findings, we lay out a series of recommendations that may guide future formulation of policies on paddy ecosystem protection and sustainable food supply.
Purpose This study explores how collaborative cost sharing between the buyer and the supplier in cold chain equipment and marketing and advertising affects the performance of a fresh agricultural produce supply chain (FAP-SC). Design/methodology/approach We use a contingency approach to modeling different scenarios and analyzing how fairness perception, interplaying with corporative–retailer cost sharing., influences the performance of fresh agricultural produce cold chains. Findings The findings of the research highlight the crucial role of the retailer's fairness concern. When the retailer's fairness concern is absent, cost sharing (in cold chain equipment and marketing and advertising) is found to help boost demand and enhance the profits of members of the supply chain; bilateral cost sharing is found to have a more significant impact than unilateral cost sharing. When the retailer's fairness concern is taken into account, however, cost sharing is found to reduce demand at a lower level of fairness coefficient but increases demand at a higher level of fairness coefficient; bilateral cost sharing boosts both demand and profit of the supply chain when the retailer is in a “high concern, high anger” state. Originality/value The findings of the research highlight the important role of the buyer's farness perception when supply chain partners adopt collaborative cost sharing programs. This study contributes significantly to research and practice in supply chain collaboration and agricultural cold chain performance.
To explicate the nature of the relationship between entrepreneurial bricolage and marketing capability, this study builds a theoretical framework to explore how strategic flexibility and market turbulence moderate this relationship. Survey data from 255 entrepreneurial firms in China reveal that entrepreneurial bricolage has a positive effect on marketing capability. This positive relationship is stronger when firms have a higher level of strategic flexibility and face a higher level of market turbulence. Meanwhile, strategic flexibility can serve as a critical strategic solution to strengthen the positive effect of entrepreneurial bricolage on marketing capability when market turbulence is higher. These findings provide novel insights into explaining whether entrepreneurial bricolage can improve marketing capability in resource-constrained entrepreneurship when different levels of market turbulence and strategic flexibility are persistent. This study also derives theoretical and managerial implications from the above findings and uses them to guide future research.
Comprehensive evaluation of the sustainability of paddy ecosystems is key to success in paddy ecosystem management. In this research, we propose a novel quantitative method for sustainability evaluation based on the net value of ecosystem services, which consists of a new elasticity-based sustainability evaluation framework for agricultural ecosystems. The sustainability of ecosystems, evaluated through ecosystem elasticity, is reflected in seven measurable indicators within three domains: ecological, which includes the proportion of paddy area, per capita cultivated land area, and annual waste water discharge per capita; economic, which includes the agricultural economy level and urbanization rate; and social, which includes education of farmers and rural medical level. The evaluation approach we propose constitutes an important contribution to sustainability evaluation methodology. We apply the proposed approach to evaluate the sustainability of China’s paddy ecosystems. The results suggest that the overall paddy ecosystem elasticity in China was on the rise in 2009–2017, indicating the weakening of anti-interference ability and stability of the paddy ecosystem and the deterioration of paddy ecosystem sustainability. Our results also reveal obvious sustainability imbalance in paddy ecosystems across different regions of China. These findings offer empirical evidence substantiating the urgent need for Chinese governmental initiatives to improve the sustainability of paddy ecosystems, particularly those in the Northeastern region. The findings also necessitate inter-regional collaborations, especially collaborations between adjacent paddy ecosystems, to institute cross-regional standards and policies pertaining to the sustainability of paddy ecosystems. The results from the evaluations of China’s paddy ecosystems may serve as a wake-up call for other countries to assess the sustainability of their own ecosystems using the approach we propose. The findings are also likely to raise the awareness of ecosystem sustainability and its evaluation, and promote global ecosystem sustainability research.
With the economic and social development, China has changed from the initial demographic dividend to an aging population, and governments at all levels have introduced a series of policies to cope with the negative effects caused by the aging population. This paper collects a total of 167 pension policy documents from 2010 to 2020, and uses text mining techniques to systematically study the characteristics and evolutionary trends of pension policies in terms of issuing agencies and contents. The conclusions drawn in this paper are as follows: First, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and other departments play a major role in the formulation of pension policies. Second, the pension policies formulated by the government during the study cycle are biased toward public service aspects, and the content of medical care, investment, and pensions is mainly indirectly focused on a cyclical basis. The findings of this paper can help the government to check the gaps and improve the existing policy system, and the research methodology can help the government to make more scientific decisions.
Purpose Drawing on the knowledge-based view, the purpose of this study is to investigate the differential effects of failure normalization (FN) and failure analysis (FA) on entrepreneurial resilience (ER) and examines how firms’ knowledge breadth (KB) and knowledge depth (KD) moderate these effects in distinctive ways. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a mixed-methods approach, including a two-wave survey study among 226 entrepreneurial high-tech firms in China and a qualitative study. Findings The findings reveal that FA has a stronger positive effect on ER than FN. KB enhances the effect of FA on ER, whereas KD enhances the effect of FN on ER but buffers the effect of FA on ER. Practical implications The study advocates that entrepreneurs need to be aware of the importance of ER and strengthen the reflection on failure. Additionally, the study suggests that entrepreneurs should match FN and FA with firms’ knowledge characteristics. With this match, KB and KD can exert greater impacts on the effect of failure learning on ER. Originality/value Knowledge can influence the effect of learning on firm capability. However, such an effect in entrepreneurial firms linking to ER remains to be explored. This study contributes to ER from the failure learning perspective and extends knowledge management theory in the entrepreneurship context.
In the process of tourism development, there are some problems that can not be ignored, such as the destruction of natural environment by scenic spot development, unfair competition in the industry, and infringement of employees' rights and interests by enterprises, which directly restrict the development of tourism industry. The issue of tourism corporate social responsibility has been in the sight of global scholars and practitioners. First of all, this paper will study and analyze the relevant theories made so far by scholars and practitioners at home and abroad, to understand the research status of social responsibility of tourism listed companies at home and abroad, as well as the status quo of corporate social responsibility. Secondly, this paper selects 23 domestic tourism listed companies to collect the panel data of their social responsibility reports from 2014 to 2018, and makes an empirical analysis on the sorted panel data through the statistical software Eviews, so as to explore the impact of social responsibility of tourism listed companies on their business performance, And draw the conclusion that tourism listed companies' business responsibility has a positive impact on their business performance, but there is a certain lag in this impact. Based on the research, this paper puts forward some feasible suggestions for tourism enterprises to take the initiative to undertake social responsibility, hoping to provide some help to scholars in related fields and practitioners in enterprises.
Multi-channel shopping keeping consumers from changing retailers during the channel conversion process has become an important issue. Showrooming, one of the increasingly popular form of multi-channel behavior, brings different influences to retailers. This paper focuses on how to keep consumers loyal to retailer of showrooming behavior during the channel conversion process, and explore its influencing factors from the perspective of cognitive appraisal theory. Three hundred and ten questionnaires were collected to conduct empirical analysis by structural equation modeling (SEM). The empirical research results show that information availability, price comparison, and after sales service positively affect perceived fluency and perceived value, but interaction service has no significant effect on perceived fluency and perceived value, and that perceived value and perceived fluency further promote the appearance of showrooming behavior. The research results improve the existing showrooming research system, and provide suggestions for retailers on how to improve the channel characteristics to promote positive showrooming.
