Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous mucocutaneous infecion caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi.The infection is non-contagious and as the name suggests, it is primarily a disease of the nose.Here, we report a rare case of rhinosporidiosis affecting the nasopharynx in a 35 year old male patient.
Background: Lymphangiomas are congenital malformations of lymphatic vessels or certain acquired factors resulting in lymphatic obstruction, lymph fluid retention, lymphangiectasia and proliferation. Two-thirds of all reported cases are present in the head and neck region. Majority of them are often present at birth and diagnosed mostly (90%) before the age of two years. These lesions are rare in adults but may occur as late as the fifth decade of life. Methods: A prospective study was done on 60 cases of Lymphangiomas of the head and neck in adults. All the cases were subjected to a clinico-pathological & clinico-radiological evaluation involving the otorhinolaryngologists, cytopathologists, interventional radiologist & the patients. The multidisciplinary approach was discussed to outline the management of Lymphangiomas of the head and neck in adults. The clinical data was analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 11. Results: In our prospective study of 60 adult patients having lymphangiomas of the head and neck region, the age of the patients was ranging from 18 to 53 years with an average mean age of 29.5 yrs. Females & males were almost equally affected as the sex ratio Female : Male was 1.06 : 1. Conclusions: The choice of treatment of lymphangiomas should be individualized and based on factors such as etiology, age of onset, growth rate, type (capillary/cavernous/cystic), depth, location, potential morbidity & potential surgical complications. The different available treatment modalities can be outlined either as a single modality of treatment or as a combination of two or more modalities in a sequential manner.
Conservative medical management of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is an important step in achieving a dry ear which is a prerequisite for the definitive surgical management of non-cholesteotomatous CSOM. Like other chronic diseases, CSOM can limit an individual's employability and quality of life. The microbial profile, antibiotic sensitivity & resistance pattern of CSOM has been changing according to geographical variation and various differences in patient population. A prospective, randomized open study of 110 patients was conducted to isolate aerobic & anaerobic organisms and their sensitivity & resistance patterns to various antibiotics among the patients suffering from non-cholesteotomatous CSOM at a charitable tertiary healthcare center located in Navi Mumbai. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was most common aerobic organism isolated (37.7%) followed by Staphylococcus aureus (31.5%). Linezolid was found to be most effective drug followed by Amikacin, Streptomycin, and ciprofloxacin. A periodic review of microbiological profile of and antibiotic sensitivity & resistance pattern of the isolates is important for effective management of CSOM.
