His doctoral research was on the development of novel geophysical testing methods for estimating the stiffness anisotropy of soils. The elastic wave velocities and small strain stiffness of soils are essential parameters which are used in the design of foundations, earth dams, deep excavations, tunnels, etc. Hence, an accurate estimation of small strain stiffness of soil is essential. His research focussed on the influence of grain characteristics (such as sizes, shapes, and roughness) on the mechanical behaviour of granular materials. The influence of fines content on the behaviour of gap-graded soil was also explored in his doctoral work. Furthermore, he had experience in working on the stabilization of expansive soils with industrial waste such as fly ash. Based on his work, the stiffness modulus degradation model for treated expansive soil was proposed
