Biography & Research interests
I graduated in 1987 in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). Between 1988-1991 I carried out my postgraduate training between the Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology of the Faculty of Medicine (UAM) and obtained the PhD degree in 1991. Between 1992-1993, I was associated lecturer and researcher between the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiology, and initiated my studies in the field of hypertension and alterations of vascular function in animal models. Between 1993 and 1997 I carried out a postdoctoral stay at the University of Glasgow (UK), at the groups of Prof. McGrath (Department of Physiology) and Prof. Dominiczak (Western Infirmary), financed by the EU and several research contracts. During this period, I learned the use of confocal microscopy techniques for the study of vascular structure and function, and participated in several research projects regarding vascular pathophysiology. In 1998 I returned to the Department of Physiology of the Faculty of Medicine of the UAM, where I have held various positions and now I have a permanent post as Lecturer. Between 2011 and 2016 I held the position of Associated Dean for International Affairs of the Faculty of Medicine, being in charge of organization of all international academic and student exchange programs. Between 2016 and 2020, I held the position of Head of the Department of Physiology at UAM.
My research interests have focused on cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology, in particular, hypertension. An important part of my work has been dedicated to the development and application of confocal microscopy techniques to the study of vascular structure and function, which I have applied to the study of vascular remodelling, elastic fibre alterations and endothelial dysfunction in animal models of cardiometabolic diseases, hypoxia and in human samples from patients with venus insufficiency.
My current research line is related to fetal and perinatal programming, studying, in animal models, the relationship between stress during intrauterine life and later development of hypertension and metabolic disorders. From 2015, I coordinate, together with Prof. M Angeles Martin Cabrejas (Food Science research), a multidisciplinary research group FOSCH (Food Oxidative Stress and Cardiovascular health). We have interests in bioactive compounds from cocoa and coffee by-products (foccussed os on antioxidants), as potential ingredients for cardiometabolic health. We are conducting sevareal studies of these by-products on the prevention/reversion of cardiovascular alterations in fetal programming, and their potential anti-obesity actions in models of diet induced obesty and inflamatory bowel disease. Some of this research is being carried out in collaboration with nutraceutical industry.
I have also interests in the field of perinatal medicine collaborating with Obstetrics and Neonatology Services of Hospital Universitario La Paz, Hospital Clínico San Carlos of Madrid (Spain), and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston, USA). We have serveral research projects to analyze bioactive compounds of human breastmilk and their relatioship with maternal biological, nutritional and psychological parameters. We are particularly interested prematurity.
We also collaborate with several researchers in the Andean region to study the cardiometabolic effects of hypobaric hypoxia in populations who live permanently or work intermittently at high altitude, and the mechanisms implicated in rat models of hypobaric hypoxia.
