Jürgen completed the first 9 years of his professional career as a police officer. This was followed by 3 years as an administrative assistant in the procurement department of the University of Oldenburg before he decided to study physics and chemistry in 1992. He graduated in 1992 with a Master of Science in Physical Chemistry. He began his doctoral work at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and completed it in Theoretical Physics at the University of Potsdam in 1998. Subsequently, he worked in various academic positions, e.g. as a PostDoc at the University of Oldenburg, as a Senior Researcher at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, and as a research associate for the German Advisory Council on Global Change. Jürgen was/is active as an expert in national and international policy advisory bodies on climate and global change issues, e.g. for the Council of Europe, GIZ, European Union, Climate-KIC, etc. In 2006, he received the Amber Tree Award from the INTERREG Office of the European Union for the realization of a visionary project that brings together economic, social and natural scientists, policy makers and planners to explore new ways of dealing with climate change and adapting to inevitable changes. In 2012, he received the prestigious CleanTechMedia Award for founding the Climate Media Factory Potsdam, an innovative media lab and think tank on modern learning and teaching formats. Jürgen was Visiting Professor at Mahidol University Bangkok/Thailand (2008-2010 2016/2017) and turned down an offer for a full professorship at Griffith University, Brisbane/Australia (2010), which was concurrent with the position of Deputy Director of the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility of Australia. Since 2010, he has been Professor of Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the University of Potsdam/Department of Environmental Sciences & Geography. At the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) he leads the working group "Urban Transformations", at the University of Potsdam the working group "Climate Change & Development". Jürgen is a successful entrepreneur, including founding the award-winning spin-off "Climate Media Factory UG" in 2011 and serving as its first CEO until 2020. He is also the Founding Vice President and Founding Dean for the Dept. of "Urban Systems & Nature-Based Solutions" at the New Bauhaus Academy, University of Applied Sciences, Berlin (in formation). This university aims to integrate cultural and entrepreneurial aspects of sustainability, the challenges of future digitalization, and transformation needs that will take place primarily in urban systems. Since 2018, he has also been a member of the Board of Governors of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development Kathmandu/Nepal (ICIMOD) and since 2020, he has been a scientific advisor and partner of the initiative "Bauhaus der Erde gGmbH (Bauhaus Earth). The latter is a non-profit organization developing technologies and visions about how urban systems can be transformed to sustainability entities.
