个人简介
Dr. Jimmy Nelson Appaturi received his PhD in Inorganic Synthetic Chemistry (2015), MSc in Chemical Instrumentation (2010) from Universiti Sains Malaysia and BSc (Hons) in Industrial Chemistry (2007) from Universiti Malaysia Sabah. His major research interest is developing mesoporous heterogeneous catalysts, characterize and utilize in eco-friendly applications such as in fine chemical synthesis, petrochemical, biodiesel and hydrogen energy. Besides that, he also synthesizes fine chemicals over metal-free solid catalysts for CO2 conversion over nanoporous green catalysts. To date, he has published 50 international top-tier journals, including Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, Microporous & Mesoporous Materials, Catalysis Today, Applied Surface Science, Molecular liquids, Journal of CO2 Utilization, and many more. Currently, he is involved in research activities that are mainly focused on the synthesis of hybrid silica-graphene-metal materials for multifunction applications such as sensors, electrocatalysts, and nanosafety for toxicology assessment. He has been awarded for outstanding contribution in reviewing the Journal of CO2 Utilization and the recognition of the contributions made to the quality of the journal for the years 2014 and 2015. He is also an associate member of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM). Additionally, he has contributed to society as a higher education counsellor and participated as chief judge in the Science Fair for Young Children.
His real exposure in teaching chemistry started during his undergraduate days when he was given responsibility to teach and demonstrate laboratory procedures and sets of fundamental chemistry experiments to new students. He had another opportunity to lecture on chemistry chapters during his doctoral studies when he joined as a lecturer at Surya College, Penang. Additionally, he served as lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Petronas after his PhD studies. He found that his professional working experience provided him with a broad view that is useful in assisting students with projects and assignments. He realised that he thoroughly enjoyed lecturing on chemistry-based subjects. He is also aware of the importance of good listening skills and using both formal and informal methods to exchange information which he learned through his teaching experience and supervision of students.
His seven years of working experience as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia and in Pharmaceutical Industries has paved way for him to be an effective researcher and instructor. The experiences that he has gained not only helped him to improve his teaching skills but also encouraged him, to pursue a life-long career in teaching and research. Now that he is equipped with the knowledge of fundamental and applied chemistry he will pass on his knowledge in this field to develop and nurture young minds in understanding chemistry better.
