Active in academic research for more than 40 years.
Main interests: various aspects of lipid metabolism including beta-oxidation (bile acid intermediates, poly-unsaturated fatty acids, isoprenoids, very long chain fatty acids), alpha-oxidation (phytanic acid, isoprenoids), omega-oxidation (cholesterol, dicarboxylic fatty acids, isoprenoids), alpha-hydroxylation (alpha-hydroxy fatty acids; sphingolipids), formation and role of ether lipids, synthesis and breakdown of bioactive sphingolipids (ceramide, sphingosine-phosphate); synthesis and analysis of lipids; role and biogenesis of peroxisomes in mammals; human peroxisomal disorders.
Co-author of more than 270 peer-reviewed publications,
Involved in the discovery of various new enzymes, in the elucidation of pathways related to beta-oxidation, alpha-oxidation, and ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate metabolism, and also the generation/characterization of related transgenic mice,
Deposited in public databases more than 30 cDNA sequences coding for enzymes involved in lipid metabolism.
