Der Schwerpunkt des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsgebietes von Dietrich Seidel liegt auf dem Gebiet der Erforschung der Lipoproteine und des Apolipoproteinssystems bei primären und sekundären Fettstoffwechselstörungen, der Identifizierung von Risikofaktoren der Atherosklerose (GRIPS-Studie) und der Therapie schwerster Fettstoffwechselstörungen. Auf diesen Gebieten leistete er wichtige, international anerkannte und zukunftsweisende Arbeiten, die sich besonders durch eine hohe klinische Relevanz auszeichnen. In jüngerer Zeit finden seine Arbeiten zusammen mit K-S. Boos zur Apheresebehandlung der Sepsis, zur Therapie der Hyperphsphatemie sowie zur Probenvorbereitung bei Vollblutmessungen internationale Beachtung.
The major scientific interest of Dietrich Seidel throughout the years concentrated on primary and secondary dyslipidemias with focus on the impact of the metabolism and structure of plasmalipoproteins and the apolipoprotein system. On this line he initiated one of the largest epidemiological studies to evaluate risk factors for atherosclerotic disease (GRIPS-study). Because of their high clinical relevance the scientific achievements of Dietrich Seidel gained international reputation and stimulated the work of many other groups. More recently his scientific work together with K-S. Boos concentrates on the development of new apheresis techniques for the treatment of inflammatory disease and sepsis, on drug treatment of hyperphosphatemia as well as on on line samplehandling and management to allow analysis on whole blood.
