Career Trajectory
Bio
Elisabete Alexandre completed her Degree in Biotechnological Engineering at the University of Algarve in 2004 and her PhD in Biotechnology with specialization in Food Science and Technology in 2011 attributed by the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Catholic University of Portugal. The PhD thesis was entitled “Non-thermal technologies to improve safety and quality of fruits and vegetables”. At same time, she was also researcher in Emercon project under the same subject. From Aug 2011 to Feb 2014, she worked as researcher fellow in FRUTAMAIS (preservation of functional, nutritional and organoleptic properties of fruits and derivate foods) and in SETIF03041/2012 (improvement of the organoleptic characteristics of express coffee) research projects, both at Faculty of Biotechnology of the Catholic University. From Mar 2014 to Nov 2014, she was post-doc researcher in CEPID 2013/07914-8 (development of edible films reinforced with nanocomposites and activated with nanoemulsions) research project at University of São Paulo (Brazil). Meantime, she got financial support from FCT and started her post doc plan in Dec 2014 at Catholic University of Portugal, University of Aveiro and Centre of Agronomic and Agro-Industrial Biotechnology of Alentejo under the subject “A novel non-thermal high pressure extraction method of chemical compounds with new and improved biological and functional activities from fruits: case study on pomegranate and cactus pear by-products”. Since Fev 2019, she is a researcher (level 1) at University of Aveiro but still continue collaborating with Faculty of Biotechnology of the Catholic University of Portugal developing her research based on her post doc research plan. Currently, her research is being focused on the extraction and modification of starches, as well as the extraction of oils from food products that are left in the field without any valorization. As Invited Assistant Professor, she was teaching Topics in Biotechnology and Physics disciplines at Bioengineering, Biosciences and Health Technologies Degrees at Faculty of Biotechnology of the Catholic University between 2004 and 2010 and Food Technology discipline at Master Degree in Biotechnology at University of Aveiro between 2019 and 2020. Elisabete published 12 book chapters, 29 reviewed papers, 10 articles in conference proceedings and 1 article in a magazine without arbitration. She participated in more than 30 congresses contributing with 6 oral communications by invitation, 9 oral communications proposals and 31 poster communications. She was involved in the organization of one international congress (EHPRG18) and one Iberian conference (Third Iberian Conference about the Acorn 2019), was evaluator of submitted abstracts in 2 congresses (EHPRG18 and XX Congresso Brasileiro de Engenharia Química) and was chairman of a section in an international congress (EHPRG18). Elisabete is/was Co- supervisor of 14 students of technological level, 11 Erasmus and/or Degree students, 6 Masters students and 1 PhD student. She was jury of 12 master's theses, 4 seminars, 1 PhD thesis project and was invited to argue 1 PhD thesis. For 3 times, she was member of a committee to select candidates for research grants. Elisabete also have been participating in the dissemination of science through its involvement in the “Catholic Open Week”, “USP NA ESCOLINHA” and in the “Summer Academy of the University of Aveiro” with experiments demonstrations and oral presentations to attract secondary student attention for science. She also reviewed more than 100 papers for journals from 1st quartile.
