Bio
Wan-yu Shih is an Associate Professor of the Master Degree Program in Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (MDR3) of the National College at National Taiwan University. She holds a PhD in Planning and Landscape from the University of Manchester, UK. Her research interests lie in the interdisciplinary nature of ecological/environmental planning and governance of cities, with a focus on green infrastructure strategy. She has been working on nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation for cities, looking at the interplay of land use, ecosystem services, and socio-economic features of urban neighourhoods as well as subsequent spatial inequality. Her recent works further expanded to the discussion of heat vulnerability in (sub)tropical, compact development settings of cities.
Dr. Shih was JSPS-UNU postdoctoral research fellow in the Sustainable Urban Future programme at United Nations University-Institute of Advanced Studies in Japan between 2011 and 2013, where she conducted research into local biodiversity conservation and climate co-benefits. She is motivated to inform decision makers for urban planning with scientific evidence through her work regarding green infrastructure and thermal environments in Taiwan; and at the same time constantly strives to develop international collaborative research. She has gained prestigious research grants, including from MOST (Taiwan), JSPS (Japan), Belmont Forum, and ESRC (UK) which have enabled her to establish research activities in countries such as South Africa, Vietnam, and the UK. Dr. Shih is sitting in the steering committee of Future Earth - Urban Knowledge and Action Network.
