Dr Eleni Kolokotroni is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (SECE), National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), with strong expertise in the design and development of in silico models (both machine-learning and mechanistic) for personalized oncology and their integration into clinical decision support systems.
She holds a diploma in Physics from the National University of Athens (UoA) and a M.Sc. in Medical Physics-Radiophysics from the Faculty of Medicine (UoA) in collaboration the Medical Departments of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Ioannina, Democritus University of Thrace University of Crete as well as the Greek Atomic Energy Commission and the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos”. She received her Ph.D. from the interuniversity postgraduate course in "Biomedical Engineering", a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine (University of Patras), the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (NTUA) and the School of Mechanical Engineering (NTUA).
Since 2004 she is a research associate at ICCS participating in several EC funded research projects. In 2007 she started collaborating as a model developer with In Silico Oncology and In Silico Medicine Group (ISOG-ISMG) of ICCS. Within the framework of European FP7, HORIZON 2020 and ERA PerMed research projects (ACGT, ContraCancrum, TUMOR, p-medicine, DrTherapat, CHIC, BOUNCE, PersoRad), she has been involved in the development and technological integration of numerous Oncosimulators and prediction models in clinical decision support systems for personalized cancer simulation, treatment response prediction and psychological resilience prediction, including (but not limited to):
• response of breast cancer to neo-adjuvant chemotherapy with epirubicin,
• response of non-small cell lung cancer to neo-adjuvant chemotherapy with cisplatin-based doublet regimens,
• response of glioblastoma multiforme to radiation in combination with temozolomide,
• prednisone response of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia,
• recurrence of non-small cell lung cancer,
• response of recurrent non-small cell lung cancer to radiotherapy in combination with chemotherapy,
• response of prostate cancer to androgen deprivation therapy with LHRH agonists.
• evolution over time of the prostate cancer volume after radiotherapy
• prediction of individual resilience trajectories of breast cancer patients throughout the cancer continuum.
Before joining the ISOG-ISMG group she was a member of the I-Sense group of ICCS, working on project management, dissemination and communication of projects’ results, pilot planning, system architecture for sensor networks and quality of service within various FP6 and FP7 projects (SENSATION, ΙΜ@GINE IT, HUMABIO, MONICO).
Her research interests include multiscale cancer modelling and simulation, in silico onclology, in silico psycho-oncology, bioinformatics, data analytics, machine learning, data mining, systems biology and applied mathematics. She is holder of the licentiates for practicing Medical Physics and Non-Ionizing Radiation and she is a member of the Union of Medical Physicists in Greece. She is a member of the Editorial Board of Computational Physiology and Medicine (specialty section of Frontiers in Physiology and Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology) as Review Editor.
