Dr Luis Fonseca is Physicist by training and holds a ‘Investigador Científico’ position at CSIC. His career at IMB-CM expands for more than 30 years, dating back to 1989 when he joined it with a predoctoral fellowship. After the completion of his doctoral thesis in 1992 on the growth and characterization of thin gate oxides for VLSI and ULSI applications, an atypical postdoctoral stage of about ten years ensued. At that period, he joined as a process engineer at the IMB-CNM brand new Clean Room, a unique research environment in the field of microfabrication in electronics in the Spanish ecosystem where he was in charge of consolidating the Thermal Processes Area. As milestones of that time, it is worth mentioning the close relationship with AT&T for the transfer of a 2.5 μm CMOS technology, as well as the development of several process modules (thermal insulated nitride membranes, low-stress structural polysilicon layers, a deep silicon doping process to define structural nerves) that facilitated the expansion of IMB-CNM to MEMS and microsystems.
In 2001, he precisely joined the microsystems group as a Senior Scientist. His field of research from that moment has focused on the use and development of micro and nanotechnologies to manufacture microdevices and systems. Initially, this task was aimed at gas sensing applications, especially for optical (infrared) gas sensing, while, in a second moment, his research activity refocused on the development of energy microgenerators to provide autonomy to microsystems. In this field he has worked on the technological development of fuel microcells, and, especially, pioneered works on thermoelectric microgenerators exploiting silicon nanowires as thermoelectric material.
He has supervised four theses and published ninety scientific articles, and participatedin more than two hundred conferences, mostly international. He has been involved in more than fifty national and international projects, with responsibilities that have been evolving and increasing over time, having been of special relevance in the European projects GoodFood (FP6, first Integrated Project coordinated by CSIC in that program), SiNERGY (FP7), and NFFA and NEP (H2020)
His international presence has been very pronounced once he reached scientific seniority. It is worth highlighting the coordination at different levels of European projects, the participation as CE expert (in different consultation meetings and project monitoring), the regular presence in technical committees of conferences (e.g PowerMEMS, and Smart System Integration), the organization of a dozen symposia and conferences (In September 2022, he will organize the European Conference of Thermoelectrics in Barcelona), his participation as a member of advisory committees, and the representation of the CNM/CSIC in European societies and platforms, as well as in delegations at global events (e.g. Micromachine Summit).
At institutional level, he led in the period 2010-2021 the Group for the Manufacturing and Integration of Sensors and Microsources of Energy (comprising about twenty people). He was deputy director of the IMB-CNM from June 2012 to May 2016 and he is his current director since May 2021. At Spanish level, he belongs to the steering committees of the Spanish ICT Technology Platform (PLANETIC), and was active a few years as member of the AENOR nanotechnology committee. At European level, he participates in the steering committes of the European Thermoelectricity Society as well as to the one of the European Technological Platform on Smart Systems (EPoSS). In relation with the latter, he is an active contributor to the Electronic Components and Systems Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, in which he has led and co-led different chapters. He is currently member and vice-chair of the International Advisory Board of CERIC-ERIC, a consortium of large scientific facilities in Central and Eastern Europe.
