Arthur D. Yaghjian (Life Fellow, IEEE) received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Brown University, Providence, RI, USA, in 1964, 1966, and 1969, respectively.
After teaching for a year, he joined the research staff of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Boulder, CO, USA. In 1983, he transferred to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Bedford, MA, USA, where he was employed as a Research Scientist until 1996. He was a Guest Professor with the Electronics and Electrical Communication Department, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India, in 1987; the Electromagnetics Institute, Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark, in 1989; and the Laboratory of Applied Electromagnetics, University of Siena, Siena, Italy, in 2007. He is currently working as an Electromagnetics Research Consultant. His work has led to the fundamental determination of electric and magnetic fields in material media, as well as to the development of exact, numerical, and high-frequency methods for predicting and measuring the near- and far-fields of antennas and scatterers in both the time and frequency domains. He has contributed significantly to the development and understanding of electrically small antennas, including supergain endfire arrays, to the characterization of metamaterials, and to the determination of the classical equations of motion of accelerated charged particles. He has determined fundamental microscopic and macroscopic energy and force expressions for both diamagnetic and paramagnetic dipolar media. He has written two books.
Dr. Yaghjian has received three best paper awards from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) as well as the best paper awards from NIST and AFRL.
