Ana Pina graduated in Applied Chemistry-Biotechnology (2007). after the final year project at Università degli studi di Torino (IT) within Erasmus program, followed by a MSc in Biotechnology (2008) both at FCT-NOVA. In 2013, she received a PhD in Biotechnology (2013) for her work with Prof Cecilia Roque (FCT-NOVA) and Prof. Chris Lowe (University of Cambridge, UK), focused on the combination of Peptide & Protein Engineering and combinatorial chemistry towards new affinity pairs tag-receptors for protein purification. During her PhD, she was a visiting scientist at the University of Cambridge (UK) and at the Scripps Institute – La Jolla (USA). For her postdoc (2014-2018), she led a project between FCT-NOVA and Prof. Rein Ulijn at Advanced Science Research Center of the City University of New York (USA), where she spent 1 year (2015-2016), combining peptide engineering with supramolecular peptide chemistry to develop peptide scaffolds with stability and dynamics to incorporate function. In 2018, she become a junior researcher at FCT-NOVA working at understanding structures typically found in biological systems (e.g., collagen triple helix), and at developing minimal artificial enzymes, bioinspired on the catalytic site of tyrosine phosphatase. Ana Pina received several awards, namely “Young Investigator Award” (Hoffman-La Roche, 2009) and a Research Fund award (2019) from Royal Society of Chemistry. In October 2021, Ana Pina joined ITQB-NOVA (PT), as group leader to work with peptide-mediated systems as functional materials to ultimately, mimic remarkable features of living cells (e.g., membraneless cellular compartmentalization).
