His current research interests focus on the synthesis, characterization and application of nanostructures and post-graphene low-dimensional materials in particular novel 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) for clean energy production, such as H2 via photoelectrochemical water splitting reaction, and environmental remediation, including photodegradation of toxic wastes and industrial dyes as well as CO2 reduction to useful chemicals by applying solar energy radiation. In recent years, his group also involves designing appropriate photocatalyst materials for the mentioned reactions using band structure calculations by Density Functional Theory (DFT). He has published about 140 research articles and several review papers and book chapters with about 3800 citations as well as co-edited a book entitled "Physics and Technology of Thin Films" published by World Scientific in 2004.
