个人简介
I obtained my Degree in Civil Engineering in 1984 from University of Glasgow. This was followed by my Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering at University of Strathclyde in 1986 and PhD in 1994 at University of Manchester under the supervision of Prof. Peter Montague. My PhD research focuses on the experimental and theoretical investigation of slabs subjected to bending moments in one plane, in two orthogonal planes, in torsion and to combinations of these three loads. The research enable the establishment of Johansen’s yield criterion in predicting the ultimate moment of slabs subjected to bending moments and torsion. I joined Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1988 as a young tutor before being appointed as a full time lecturer of the Department of Civil Engineering in 1994. In 1998, I was then promoted as an Associate Professor. During my career at UPM, my colleagues and I established the Housing Research Centre (HRC) at UPM and successfully developed the Mortarless Interlocking Loadbearing Hollow Block which receives the Gold Award at the Geneva International Convention in 2001. The research was granted its patent from United Kingdom in May 2002 (Patent No: GB2361254). The research was also awarded another patent in the USA in June 2005 (Patent No: US6907704 B2). My research interest then focusses on the structural development of Precast Concrete Sandwich Panel as an alternative building system for the construction industry in Malaysia. The panel system uses two concrete wythe as outer skins connected by shear connectors to create a composite behaviour to the panel. The gap between the two concrete wythe creates a vacuum trapping hot air, hence, allowing the interior building to be thermally comfortable. A suitable jointing system was also developed for the precast concrete sandwich panel focusing on the L-joints, T-joints and cross joints. I am also actively involved in the research for shear strengthening and repair of damage structures using externally bonded Bi-directional Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strips. Recently in August 2016, I was awarded a new Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia to study the utilization of agricultural and construction waste as a green building material (or Green Concrete). The study will proceed by using the green concrete for the development of a new interlocking block construction wall system for the housing needs of the low and middle income groups in Malaysia. In 2003, I joined Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) as a Professor in Structural Engineering and was subsequently appointed to the position of Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. From 2007, I was then promoted to the position of Dean of the Faculty. From 1 October 2010 to 30 September 2012, I had the opportunity to hold a position as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and International), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia. After completing my term as Deputy Vice Chancellor, I was then Director of UTHM International Office in 2015. Currently, I am on sabbatical leave at The Department of Infrastructure Engineering, The University of Melbourne, Australia under the supervision of Professor Priyan Mendis, focusing on writing and publishing peer reviewed journals and conferences. When I was the Dean of Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2007 to 2010), I was directly involved in the accreditation process for the Degree in Civil Engineering with Honours from the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of Malaysia. The degree programme successfully received its 5 years accreditation award and the programme was than registered under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA). I am also fortunate to have the experience in developing the new Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering (Mix-mode) at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. Throughout my 25 years of academic career, research grants in totalled of USD1,000,000 was successfully obtained and from there I have successfully supervised 8 PhD students, 12 Master’s Degree students and nearly 50 Final Year Projects. I am still currently supervising 5 on-going PhD students. I have also published more than 50 refereed international journal papers and presented over 70 papers at various international and national conferences.
