His initial interest was in elucidation of the structure and function of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa was conducted at Queen’s University, This then evolved into studying the mechanisms involved in the changes in LPS induced by prophages. With enhanced developments in DNA sequencing technology he shifted his research direction to viral and bacterial genomics; and, phage taxonomy. He is a long term member of ICTV’s Bacterial and Archaeal Viruses Subcommittee.
