Stephen is an expert in research in art and design.
Professor of Design Research at the Royal College of Art, he also advises other universities, particularly in relation to REF 2021 (the UK government census of research quality). Other evaluation of research includes peer review for UK Research Councils, journals, conferences and for research assessment processes internationally.
He provides training on the development and submission of research for such processes, including practice-based research. He has extensive experience in reviewing and improving bids for research funding.
Stephen’s personal research is concerned with the visual representation of historical time, combining historical investigation with the development of new, digital practice. He is also investigating the origins of Design Research particularly at the RCA in the 1960s and 70s.
