The overall research motive of the Quantum Photonics Laboratory at Heriot-Watt University is to create the ideal quantum photonic device: ultra-coherent quantum states that can be initialized, manipulated and read-out using quantum optical techniques while retaining the electronic and optical functionality of semiconductors.
We work at the interface of quantum optics, condensed-matter physics, materials science, and nano-optics to pursue this goal. Materials systems we explore include different types of semiconductor quantum dots and defect centres in diamond. We also work in the design, fabrication, and characterization of novel nano-photonic structures using our new NanoFabrication facility. Our research enables the discovery of new science which is likely to be essential for future technologies.
