Career Trajectory
Bio
C. Durães graduated in Biology and obtained an MSc in Plant Biology from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. She obtained a PhD in Ecological and Evolutionary Genetics (University of Edinburgh and NHM, UK, 2005) earning research training in population genetics, evolutionary processes and biostatistics. C. Durães joined the group of Raquel Seruca at Ipatimup (Porto, Portugal) in 2006 as an FP6 postdoc to study genetic susceptibility to gastric cancer. She was awarded two postdoctoral grants by FCT (2010 and 2015) to investigate several aspects of gastric cancer genetics and gastric premalignant conditions. She has established several collaborations with national and international researchers and developed projects in the field of susceptibility to complex inflammatory and auto-immune diseases, other than gastric cancer. During this stage, C. Durães was awarded a CRUP grant to train at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (Barcelona), extended over several short-term visits.
At the end of her first FCT postdoctoral grant, C. Durães joined the group of José Carlos Machado, where she developed projects in the area of tumour heterogeneity, the interplay of cancer genetics and immunosurveillance, employing next-generation sequencing (DNA and RNA) and digital PCR. C. Durães has since collaborated in other projects of the group investigating cancer drug resistance and the bio-dynamics of exosomes. In this regard she has acquired expertise in immunology, experimental design using animals and nanoparticle tracking analysis. During her scientific trajectory, C. Durães has acquired relevant expertise in biostatistics and organised workshops on biostatistics at Ipatimup. Since December 2015 at i3S, C. Durães has also been the laboratory manager of José Carlos Machado’s group, coordinating and administering several projects for four PIs. The main functions involved general project coordination, assisting in grant writing and securing funding, budget administration, equipment acquisition, purchasing of supplies and services, inventory control, staff training and implementation of laboratory safety. She was also the person responsible for the group’s cell culture facility.
In 2021, C. Durães joined Thermo Fisher Scientific CSD’s Medical Affairs team, where she applies her qualified analytical skills to translate scientific documents into simplified information and fosters research data through several educational and clinical research programmes.
