RESEARCH INTERESTS
The research activity mainly involves the fluid dynamical characterization of systems of interest for the chemical processes and energy industry, in order to improve their understanding and optimise their design.
Fluid dynamics has been studied with both experimental and modelling techniques. Experimental techniques are mainly laser diagnostics techniques, such as laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), were used to characterize turbulent flows. Such measuring systems are combined to signal and phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) analysis techniques (both frequency analysis, Fast Fourier transforms and Lomb-Scargle periodogram, and time-frequency analysis, Wavelets transforms) used to derive turbulent energy spectra as well as to characterise flow instabilities in the systems under investigation.
Modelling techniques are based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Indeed Chiara Galletti is responsible of the Computational Fluid Dynamics laboratory of Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica, Chimica Industriale e Scienza dei Materiali of University of Pisa, where different commercial CFD codes are available (Fluent, CFX, Star-CCM+). The modelling activities regard mainly systems of interest for the energy industry, thus reactive turbulent flows. A first research activity regards the MILD or flameless combustion which has been modelled in both lab-scale and industrial burners; predictions are compared to experimental data with the aim of validating the turbulence/chemistry interaction treatment, oxidation schemes and pollutant formation paths.
A second research activity concerns the modelling pyrolysis of coal/biomass in entrained flow reactors to aid experimental campaigns and help interpreting measurements. Finally, a recent activity regards the modelling of oxy-combustion of NG and pulverised coal in a semi-industrial furnace in order to validate the combustion/kinetic schemes and radiative sub-models in case of CO2-enriched atmosphere.
