Dr. Kofron's early work focused on the development novel assays to break down the complex mixture of cues involved in neuronal guidance in vivo and to begin to recombine defined presentation of these cues and characterized neuronal outgrowth response in these 3D and microfabricated culture systems. During her postdoctoral studies, she focused on cardiac models developing 3D microtissue models of interstitial and compact fibrosis to elucidate the role of cardiac fibroblasts in regulating cardiomyocyte electrical function and mechanisms of proarrhythmic electrical activity. Her current work seeks to develop an in vitro screening platform for pro-arrhythmic toxicity testing using human 3D cardiac microtissues.
