I obtained a degree in biology from the University of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), in 2008. I began my research career at the same university, participating in the research project “Causes and consequences of invasive exotic trees in the Iberian Peninsula (ref. CGL2007-61873/BOS)”. I continued my training at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and I obtained a Master´s degree in Biotechnology, in 2012. I obtained a PhD degree in biotechnological engineering, also from the USC, in 2016. I carried out my doctoral studies at the Institute of Agrobiological Research of Galicia (IIAG-CSIC) with a JAE PreDoc grant. My thesis project, entitled Physiological and molecular analysis of the in vitro rooting process of forest species: chestnut and poplar, was financed via a project funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, “Functional analysis of genes of the GRAS family in the rooting of forest species (ref. AGL2008-05105-C02-02/FOR)”, and a project funded by the Xunta de Galicia, “Characterization of chestnut genes involved in morphogenetic processes of interest for the propagation of selected trees (ref. 10MRU400033PR)”. During my doctoral research I acquired skills in the main techniques involved in the in vitro propagation of woody species as well as the molecular techniques that enable genetic analysis of organogenetic processes. As part of my training, I completed a pre-doctoral stay in the Department of Forest Biotechnology at the IBET/ITQB-UNL in Oeiras (Portugal), in 2014, under the supervision of Dr. Celia de Miguel. During the stay, I was able to work on and analyze transformed lines of poplar. At the end of my PhD studies, I was contracted as a researcher at the Areeiro Plant Pathology Station (Pontevedra). There I mainly worked on a project entitled “Molecular and genetic bases of the interaction between the fungus Ciborinia camelliae and the species of the genus Camellia” with the aims of determining the infection mechanisms of C. camelliae and applying biotechnological tools to generate tolerant genotypes of different species of the Camellia genus. In addition, I also worked on the in vitro propagation (by organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis) of other woody species such as blueberry and kiwi and participated in studies on the susceptibility of species of the genus Quercus to the fungus Phytophthora cinnamoni. At present, I am working in the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory of the Promiva Foundation (Madrid), conducting research on ornamental species, such as petunia, calibrachoa, verbena and geranium, as well as on species of agronomic interest, such as pistachio, raspberry, papaya and asparagus. We are currently collaborating in two projects involving the selection and propagation of holm oak and cork oak trees that display resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi: Quercus selection and GOP Quercus Madrid.
As summary of my research career, I have worked on in vitro culture as the main tool for multiple objectives such as the propagation of selected individuals, physiological, genetic and molecular studies, phytopathology research and conservation. My scientific activity throughout these years includes participation in 3 research projects, publication of 4 SCI papers, contribution to 1 book chapter, presentation of 26 communications at international (15) and national (11) conferences, 10 as oral communications.
