Francesco Musumeci was born in Catania on March the 16th 1949 and he is full professor of Applied Physics at “Università degli Studi di Catania”.
Teaching activity: He has a huge experience holding, since 1979, several courses as: Fisica dello Stato Solido, Fisica Generale I, Esercitazioni di fisica sperimentale, Fisica Sperimentale I, Fisica Sperimentale II, Campi Elettromagnetici, Fisica delle Superfici, Fisica dei Semiconduttori, Proprietà Strutturali dei Materiali Biologici, Fondamenti di Fisica Applicata and giving monographic lectures, as an advisor and a member of the Committee of the PhD program in Physical Engineering of the University of Catania. He’s been invited as a speaker to several international congresses and he has given many lectures in Italy and abroad. He has been teacher in different international Summer Schools.

Other information: He has served as a referee for different international journals in the field of photobiology and he has been or is a member of the European Society for Photobiology (ESP), the Società Italiana di Biofisica Pura e Applicata (SIBPA), the International Society For Optical Engineering (Spie) and the International Institute of Biophysics of Neuss and American Chemical Society. He is researcher at the INFN.
Research activity: Francesco Musumeci is author or co-author of more than 100 papers on international journals, international volumes or national journals, and editor of a volume published by World Scientific. After some initial investigation on the application of solar energy, Francesco Musumeci , as principal investigator of the PHOEBO research group at DMFCI-University of Catania and LNS-INFN, currently performs and coordinate research on the influence of ionizing radiations on living systems, on the interaction between electromagnetic fields and living systems, on the modelling of photo-induced Delayed Luminescence (DL) emitted from biological systems, on the development of detectors of single photons in the optical range and, finally, on the application of DL as a diagnostic tool. A theoretical model has been formulated which connects the photo-induced luminescence with the formation and subsequent dissociation of auto-localized electron states (solitons) that, as suggested by Davydov, could take part in the processes of charge and energy transport along macroscopic distances during physiological processes. The proposed model succeeds to explain many aspects of the photo-induced luminescence, starting from the non-exponential behavior of the kinetics in a wide range of physiological conditions. Further studies concerned the photo-induced luminescence emitted from a simpler system, such as the collagen fibers, prospecting to test the model proposed for this system. In a first phase, it has been seen that, also in the case of collagen, system organization strongly influences and determines the behavior of luminescence and a strict correlation exists between the dielectric properties of the sample and its DL.The obtained results have on the whole demonstrated the presence, in the biological domain, of relevant phenomena which cannot be described from a reductionism point of view but need an approach, based on quantum mechanics formalisms, taking into account the role of collective processes.During the whole research different experimental apparatuses, based on single photon detection chains, the more and more accurate and powerful, have been developed for time resolved measurement of the weak light signals emitted from the living systems. Innovative detection systems as SPAD and SIPM, have been tested to provide time resolved images with single photon sensitivity.In the next future Francesco Musumeci have intention to explore the possibility of developing, starting from the preliminary results already achieved, an optical biopsy technique based on DL. Recently Francesco Musumeci has explored the behaviour of water close to solid surfaces in order to better understand the role of water in living matter and the characteristics of plasma produced by laser or by cluster ions beams in view of possible applications in the energy production field.
