Bio
The proposed project, Navigating New Currents: Strengthening Family-School-Community Partnerships to Improve Outcomes for Pacific Island Students (“New Currents”), builds on our IES-funded Latinx immigrant family-school partnership study, Nuestras Familias: Refining an Evidence-based Intervention to Promote Latino Student Academic Success and Positive Behavioral Outcomes through School-Family Partnerships. New Currents will add critical new elements focused on culturally responsive literacy instruction involving families and teachers together supporting elementary school students. As a Co-Investigator on our earlier Nuestras Families project, I led the qualitative aspects of our formative research, co-wrote curriculum, co-facilitated classes for teachers and school personnel, and was involved in every aspect of the pilot study, including analyses and dissemination activities. In addition, I bring more than 17 years of experience with federally-supported research (e.g., IES, NIH, CMS) through the University of Oregon’s Center for Equity Promotion (CEQP) and earlier community-based policy research. My scientific knowledge and project leadership skills are further rooted in my prior research experience in Chicago and Washington, DC. In Oregon, I have engaged in all aspects of CEQP’s longitudinal research projects, and have led the team’s work to investigate links among contextual stressors, stress, and health outcomes for families and students. I also bring to this project my extensive experience working as a lecturer, advisor, and mentor to undergraduate and graduate students.
