Bio
Ihab El-Kady received the B.Sc. degree in physics from Cairo University, Giza, Egypt, in 1993, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in condensed matter physics from the Iowa State University of Science and Technology, Ames, IA, USA, in 1999 and 2002, respectively.
At Iowa State University of Science and Technology, he studied computational electrodynamics, wave propagation in complex media, photonic crystals, plasmonics, and metamaterials. He is currently a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff with the Applied Photonic Microsystems Department, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM, USA. While with Sandia, led the development of the seminal award winning group theory based inverse design MIRaGE Toolkit. He is the lead Sandia National Laboratory investigator on the mechanical transduction of data and power through sealed barriers. He holds 19 issued patents, 26 patent applications, more than 226 publications, and 30 invited talks. He is currently leading several research projects including nano-scale photonics and phononics, metamaterials, micro-scale thermal transport, thermoelectrics, and optomechanics. As a Principal Member of Technical Staff, he developed the Group theory methodology for inverse design of metamaterials based on symmetry analysis. As a Staff member, he was the Principal Investigator of several internally funded research projects.
