Whether it was the artistry that attracted my attention to Biology or vice versa, my elementary school notebook was like a sketchbook filled with my drawings of creatures or plants. In private high school I was selected to represent the school in Biology Olimpiad competitions, where for some time I was excused from other classes to take on extensive preparation regime. While in that school, I won the scholarship to come to USA for a year and was lucky to take part in the Human Genome Project with Dr. Maureen Munn, who volunteered to help me with my high school Science Fair project. Visiting USA made me realize the true potential opportunities for research, so a few years later I came to major in Biochemistry at the SUNY College at Old Westbury, where I got my first scientific contribution in the form of my first authorship, from working with my Molecular Biology teacher Dr. Manya Dhar-Mascareno on the role of Hexim1 protein in cancer. Upon finishing college, I received an internship opportunity at University of Rochester, where I worked with Dr. Vera Gorbunova to understand why naked mole rats age slowly. Shortly after, I joined the laboratory of Dr. Joseph Wedekind as a technician at the same University and took part in investigating the structural biology of HIV and RNA-mediated cell signaling in prokaryotes. That seven-year period in Dr. Wedekind’s lab was the most productive in my career so far, as my contributions led to numerous authorships in the literature, two invention disclosures and two funded R01 grant proposals. Most importantly, it cultivated my passion for more discoveries. I plan to remain in the academia – I want to become a professor in the future. In 2018 I was accepted to the University of Pittsburgh as a PhD student in the Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology program. After promoting to the second year, I joined the laboratory of Dr. Andrew VanDemark and identified the project for my thesis. I am now studying how a lipid-binding protein PEBP1 promotes generation of hydroperoxyl phospholipids in asthma. Throughout my scientific journey, I have hands-on experience working with proteins, RNA and have now started understanding lipid biology in more detail. After mastering the X-ray crystallography in Dr. VanDemark’s lab, I intend to also learn about the CryoEM methodologies during the PhD and post-doc years. My ultimate goal is to become an independent investigator in the field of infectious diseases.
