Jalal Mahmud is a Research Scientist, Master Inventor, Manager and Tech Lead. His research interests include Applied Machine Learning, Data Mining, Computational User Modeling, Intelligent User Interface, Web Analytics, Social Media Analysis. He is the IDT lead of Watson Core/Research IDT from Almaden and also serves as Professional Interest Community (PIC) co-chair for Interaction PIC. He served as research lead for several Watson products such as personality insights, tone analyzer and emotion modeling. He is serving as tech lead for several natural language based products (e.g., Sentiment modeling) for IBM Watson.

Jalal has published papers in top rated conferences such as WWW, IUI, SDM, CHI, MobiSys. His publications are indexed by DBLP and Google Scholar. He received best paper nominations in WWW 2006 and WWW 2007 for his work in Web accessibility. He has also received best paper nominations in IUI 2012 for his work in automating functional manual tests. Recently he has received best paper nomination in IUI 2013 for his work in recommending targeted strangers for crowd-sourced information collection and in IUI 2014 for his work on identifying Twitter users to spread information.

Jalal is an IBM Master Inventor. He has 40 issued patents, filed 23 other patents (pending at USPTO), and received 14th Platau Invention Achievement Award. He is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He is also a senior member of ACM.
