In 2016, Joana Leitão Castro enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree (BSc) Program in Biology, at the Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto (FCUP), where she developed a particular interest in cellular and molecular biology, more specifically, in developmental biology (DevBio), gene expression, immunology and cancer. These subjects led her to choose the Cell Growth and Differentiation Group (CGD), at i3S in Porto, as the ideal place to intern for her BSc's internship project, which she concluded with the highest grade (20/20). The project, "Hoxd13 targets and vertebrate limb evolution", aimed to further explore the molecular mechanisms and regulatory processes underlying fin development in zebrafish embryos, as well as the role they played during evolution and the fin-to-limb transition. This project, gave her the opportunity to present at five Conferences and earn two awards: for best abstract and best oral communication. While at the CGD group, the project "HOXB genes function in breast cancer" engendered her curiosity, which led her to excitedly engage in this new challenge and delve into the world of development cancer research. In 2019, she enrolled in the Cellular and Molecular Biology Master's Program at FCUP, while maintaining a position at the CGD group, concluding it with the classification of 19/20. She developed her Master's dissertation as part of the last year of the above-mentioned master's program, titled "Epigenetic regulation of HOXB genes and novel targeted therapies for breast cancer", which she concluded with the highest grade (20/20). Currently, she is continuing to explore this topic, and gain further knowledge of the mechanisms underlying HOXB dysregulation in breast cancer.
