Joaquín López-Serrano studied chemistry at the University of Murcia, Spain, where he also completed his PhD thesis (2004) on organometallic palladium complexes. Then he joined the group of Prof. S. B. Duckett, at the University of York (UK), with a postdoctoral position to apply hyperpolarization techniques within Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to the study of inorganic reactions and catalysis mechanisms. During this time, he took part in the early development of a new hyperpolarizarion technique, Signal Amplification by Reversible Exchange or SABRE.
As a result of this period Joaquín has 14 publications and one patent in the field of hyperpolarisation and NMR including one Science paper (Science, 2009, 323, 1708-1011) and two recent collaborations with Prof. Duckett (Catal. Sci. Technol., 2017, 7(10), 2101–2109; and Eur. J. Inorg. Chem., 2022,e202100991, doi.org/10.1002/ejic.202100991).
Joaquín became interested in the use of molecular modelling in the study of reaction mechanisms following a visit to the group of Prof. Agustí Lledós at the UAB, Spain, and since he has incorporated quantum mechanics calculation methods in his research.
In 2008 he returned to Spain and obtained a Ramón y Cajal Research contract at the University of Seville, working in the group of Prof. E. Carmona at the Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas (IIQ; US-CSIC). In 2017 he became “Profesor Titular” (associate professor) of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Seville. At present, he continues working at the IIQ, where he collaborates with several research groups. His research interests include all aspects of molecular inorganic and organometallic chemistry, with emphasis in the use of computational methods in the study reaction mechanisms and molecular properties.
Joaquín López has co-authored more than 80 publications in international journals and has an H-index of 28. Relevant contributions of the last ten years are included at the end of this section.
As part of his teaching duties, he teaches Inorganic Chemistry and Bioinorganic Chemistry courses for undergraduates at the faculties of Farmacy and Chemistry of the Universidad de Sevilla. In addition, he regularly supervises degree thesis (1-2 per year) and master thesis. He has co-supervised one Ph. D. Thesis and is currently co-supervising two more, one of which is due by the first semester of 2023.
Joaquín López has recently been appointed vice director of the Instituto IIQ and is the scientist in charge for the NMR service of the Centro de Investigaciones Científicas of Seville (CIC Cartuja), of which the IIQ is part.
