Research Interests:
Jordan Marković has been working on the determination of chemical composition and nutritive value of forage crops, especially perennial legumes, as well as annual legumes grown in mono-crop and in a bi-crop with cereals. Much importance is given to the research of the macro and micro-elements content in the soil and the forages, including whole plant, leaf and stem. The subject of his study was also lignin, as a component of plant cell wall that significantly affect feed intake by animals. He paid special attention to the research of the proteins and carbohydrates nature, according to the CNCPS (Cornell Net Carbohydrates and Protein System) system. Based on this model it is possible to specify the ways to meet the needs of different categories of animals for maintenance, growth and milk production. He began working on the study of the phenolic compounds content, as the main carriers of antioxidant activity, and the content of condensed tannins and their influence on the protein degradability in the rumen. He participated in national and international scientific conferences that deal with problems of forages planting, methods of preserving, quality, chemical composition and nutritive value of forage crop. In his work so far, he has published about 200 articles, a significant number of which have been published in international journals.
Other activity:
During his work so far, Jordan Marković has put into practice numerous analytical methods for determining the nutritive value of forages. He participated in equipping the agrochemical laboratory with the necessary modern equipment for the analysis of forages and concentrated feeds, and initiated the application of the most modern analysis systems for evaluating the nutritive values of forages - Detergent System af analysis, CNCPS - Cornell Net Carbohydrates and Protein Systems, which was developed at the prestigious world University, Cornell University, Department of Animal Science and Division of Nutritional Sciences, Ithaca, New York, United States of America. He also put into practice the application of methods for determining pseudo-total and available quantities of heavy metals in soils.
