My research has always focused on the biotechnological applications of animal immunology. Initially, I worked on the development of monoclonal antibodies as tools to characterize porcine leukocytes, including leukocyte receptors relevant to pig- to human xenotransplantation. I have worked on molecular cloning of antigens for vaccines and used systems biology to analyze transcriptional profiles as a means to monitor immune responses in animals.
I currently lead the group " Biotechnology of macromolecules" in the Department of Life and Earth Sciences at CSIC's Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA).
Our group focuses on the biotechnology of Immune Defense Strategies, such as the production of natural antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and IgY antibodies in vertebrates. We use bioinformatics tools to identify AMPs in genomes and transcriptomes of different animal species.
Our goal is to develop innovative and sustainable biotechnological solutions to address the challenges of antimicrobial resistance and to promote environmentally friendly approaches to pathogen control in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and human health. We believe that both AMPs and IgY antibodies can provide innovative solutions to current antimicrobial resistance challenges while reducing the environmental impact of conventional antimicrobials.
Current Research Interest:
- Expanding our knowledge of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that can be used as alternatives to conventional antibiotics.
- Development of IgY antibodies with specific binding properties to improve their efficacy for the development of targeted therapies for various diseases.
