Research summary
Transparency of the cornea, our window to the world, and functionality of the neighbouring conjunctiva are critical for vision. Compromise of the various stem cells that maintain these tissues can lead to blindness. The Cells for Sight Team is aiming to understand the biology and therapeutic potential of stem cells (and the cells with which they interact) to develop and deliver novel cell-based therapies and anti-scarring strategies for patients with blinding corneal and conjunctival disease. We have a special interest in developing novel methods of delivering cells to the cornea including tissue engineering. Other research areas include interrogation of the stem cell niche, including the role of Pax6 in ocular surface failure in aniridia and investigating the mechanisms of conjunctival scarring in order to develop therapeutic anti-scarring strategies
