Leon Lefferts was born in 1960. He received the Engineering and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, in 1984 and 1987, respectively.
He trained as a Chemical Engineer with the University of Twente under the guidance of Prof. P. J. Gellings and worked with Prof. J. Ross on selective oxidation of methanol over silver catalysts. He continued to specialize on heterogeneous catalysis and joined the DSM Research Laboratories, Geleen, The Netherlands, as a Project Leader and a Senior Researcher, where he worked on several subjects, including catalyst characterization, hydrogenation catalysts, slurry phase catalysis, carbon-supported catalysts, metal catalysts, and kinetics. He organized several national and international meetings, namely, Europacat II in Maastricht. Since 1999, he has been a Full Professor of catalytic processes and materials with the Catalytic Processes and Materials group, MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Twente. In January 2005, he was appointed as a Visiting Professor with Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan. His current research interests within the field of applied heterogeneous catalysis include new concepts for selective oxidation, fundamental and engineering aspects of application of heterogeneous catalysts in liquid phase, and catalysis for sustainable processes for fuels and chemicals. He has co-authored about 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is the holder of three patents.
Dr. Lefferts is a member of the board of the Netherlands Institute for Catalysis Research (NIOK) and the Editorial Board of Applied Catalysis A: General. He was a Former Chairman of the Netherlands' Catalysis and Chemistry Conference and a Former Chairman of the Board of the Catalysis Section of the Royal Dutch Chemical Society. He was the recipient of the Catalysis Prize of the section Catalysis awarded by The Royal Dutch Chemical Society for his Ph.D. thesis.
