His main research interests include statistical signal processing and modeling of biomedical signals. Current research projects include applications in atrial fibrillation, hemodialysis, high-resolution ECG analysis, power efficient signal processing in pacemakers, and detection of otoacoustic emissions. He is, together with Pablo Laguna, the author of Bioelectrical Signal Processing in Cardiac and Neurological Applications (Elsevier, 2005).

Dr. Sörnmo is a Fellow of IEEE, International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE), American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and Sciences (EAMBES). Since 2001, he is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions of Biomedical Engineering. He is also an Associate Editor of Medical and Biological Engineering & Computing, and on the editorial board of Biomedical Engineering (Biomedizinische Technik), Journal of Electrocardiology and Biomedical Signal Processing & Control. He was on the editorial board of Computers in Biomedical Research from 1997 to 2000. He served on the board of directors for Computing in Cardiology from 2008 to 2017.
