个人简介
Phosphoinositides (or PIPs) are a family of regulatory molecules that are important in controlling a diverse range of processes such as the growth and survival of cells. We study PIPs because abnormal levels of them can cause a wide range of human diseases including cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disorders and certain muscle and nerve conditions. We use fruit flies (Drosophila) to study PIPs as we can genetically manipulate fruit flies within a short time frame. Furthermore, the molecules and processes regulated by PIPs are similar in fruit flies and humans. We can also use fluorescently-labelled reporters that bind to the PIPs and reveal their location. This is useful for understanding how PIPs interact with other molecules.
