Career Trajectory
Bio
Mário Grãos is Assistant Researcher at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra (CNC) since 2014 and Contracted Researcher at Biocant since 2005. Is Principal Investigator of the Cellular Mechanobiology group (CNC) since 2017 (https://bit.ly/2AsyZR9). Obtained a PhD degree in Biology (specialty in Cell Biology) in 2006 from the Faculty of Sciences - University of Lisbon (Portugal) under the scope of the Gulbenkian PhD Program in Biology and Medicine (7th PGDBM). Developed his thesis at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science – IGC (Oeiras, Portugal) in the field of Cell Biology, studying the regulation and interplay between cell cycle and apoptosis. Obtained a BSc degree in Biochemistry in 1999 from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology - University of Coimbra (Portugal).
His main research field is Cell and Molecular Biology, with more recent work on Cell Mechanobiology with emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases and stem cells. Is particularly interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways responsible for integrating biophysical (mechanotransduction) and biochemical stimuli involved in cellular patho/physiological processes, cell survival & differentiation, cell potency & reprogramming, regulation of the cytoskeleton & cellular proteome. Current models include adult & pluripotent stem cells, primary neurons & oligodendrocytes and cell lines relevant to study neurodegenerative diseases (namely multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease) and explore regenerative and precision medicine. This is articulated with the development of platforms that mimic mechanical and biochemical components of the extracellular matrix to perform ex vivo studies, suitable for the culture of primary cells and cell lines.
Published at least 25 articles in international peer-reviewed journals (5 as corresponding senior author) and 3 book chapters, with at least 1477 citations, i10 index 18, h-index 16 (https://scholar.google.pt/citations?hl=en&user=6dlIqxgAAAAJ&view_op=list_works&sortby=pubdate). Publications include Nature Communications, Cell Death & Differentiation, Nanoscale Horizons, Redox Biology, J. Neuroscience, Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, and Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience.
Has been recipient of at least 14 research grants (total funding over 2.25M EUR), 3 as PI and 3 as co-PI (1.244.630,77 EUR), and 8 as researcher (1.009.632,10 EUR). Has received 2 fellowships: PhD fellowship from FCT SFRH/BD/2729/2000 (in 2000); and a PGDBM (Gulbenkian PhD Program in Biology and Medicine) fellowship from the Gulbenkian Foundation/FLAD/FCT (in 1999).
Currently supervises 2 PhD students & 1 technician and co-supervises 2 PhD students & 1 MSc student. Has completed the supervision of 1 post-doctoral researcher and 1 PhD student, co-supervision of 1 PhD student and supervision of 10 MSc students and 4 undergraduate students.
Was examiner of 5 PhD and 13 MSc theses defenses.
Has performed as peer reviewer of at least 29 manuscripts submitted to international journals, including Advanced Science, Advanced Biosystems, Acta Biomaterialia, Biomaterials Science, Stem Cells.
Teaching activities include lectures on topics within the Cell Biology field — namely related with mechanotransduction and modulation of cell fate, mechanobiology and neurodegenerative diseases, apoptosis and other cell biology-related topics — in PhD and MSc programs (mostly at the University of Coimbra) and other advanced courses.
Since October 2012, the laboratory led by Mário has provided services of cell culture and xMAP Multiplex analyses. The laboratory holds the ISO 9001 certification since November 2015 for ‘Cell and tissue culture’.
Mario was involved in several outreach and educational activities for science dissemination to the community, including talks for high school students, teachers, elderly and population in general, including activities & courses promoted by IEC and Brain Awareness Week.
