Mª Teresa Azcondo Sánchez has a degree in Chemical Sciences by the University Complutense de Madrid and her PhD. in Chemistry from the same university (June 18, 1996). She works in the San Pablo CEU University since October 1995 and is currently Professor in Inorganic Chemistry at this university. She has three consolidated teaching five-year terms and one in progress. She was granted with a one-year “Marie Curie” Postdoctoral Curie contract starting in February 1998 at the “Center de Recherche Paul Pascal” (Bordeaux, France) of t the Center Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).
During her Ph.D. and PostDoctoral periods and until 1999, her research was focused on the synthesis, characterization, and study of electrical and magnetic properties of supramolecular architectures, currently denoted as Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs). From 1999 to the present, the research activity focuses exclusively on the synthesis, characterization, and study of properties of inorganic materials for energy: electrodes and electrolytes for fuel cells, oxides for hydrogen and syngas production through "water splitting" and “carbon dioxide splitting”, and for thermal energy storage.
She is an expert in materials preparation by unconventional synthesis methods (combustion, mechanochemistry, hydrothermal, sol-gel, etc) to obtain nano or submicron-sized materials, in materials processing to prepare dense and/or porous bodies (in the form of sponges, monoliths, etc), and in characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray and neutron diffraction, impedance spectroscopy, magnetism, etc.
She has been participating in competitive projects, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Community of Madrid or the European Union, without interruption since 1994.
In the last 10 years she has been working on mixed-oxides with redox and catalytic activity for electrodes in SOFC (solid-oxide fuel cells). In this topic she published about 20 papers in top journals. From 2018 she leads the works on water splitting and thermal energy storage in the CEU Group. As a result, the first family of perovskites capable of producing high yields of hydrogen in isothermal conditions at moderate temperature (700 °C) was reported. Many other related materials were designed, prepared (by non-conventional routes) and tested for the application. The outstanding behaviour of these compounds deserved the request of a patent to protect their use for green hydrogen production. Currently, once the patent is pending, several papers are submitted in high-quality journals to disseminate the results. Besides, she leads the creation of a consortium with three companies (two transnational ones, and one PYME) to develop a private project (funded by the companies and the host University) to construct a prototype to produce green hydrogen using solar radiation that will start in the first quarter of 2022.
She has four concatenated six-year periods of investigation recognized by the CNEAI: 1994-1999, 2000-2005, 2006-2011 and 2012-2017. All his articles are indexed in JCR and in Q1. She has supervised a doctoral thesis and two others are in progress. She is a regular user of large scientific facilities such as ESRF and ILL, and reviewer of international scientific journals (Inorg. Chem., J. Mat. Chem. A, Dalton Trans.). She has also obtained three Angel Herrera awards for the best research work in the years 2007, 2017 and 2020.
At the San Pablo CEU University she has been Coordinator of First of all Degrees taught at the Faculty of Pharmacy during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 academic years and, continuously, from the 2012-2013 academic year to the present. She has obtained three awards at the San Pablo CEU University for teaching quality in the years 2017 and 2020
Aware of the importance of popular science, she participates in science week programs, researchers' night, etc., and writes articles in popular science magazines such as "The Conversation" or National Geographic.
