Marco Alessandro Pierotti graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Milan in 1973 and since 1988 is a Professor of Molecular Genetics of Tumours at the Postgraduate School of Oncology in the University of Milan Medical School and since 2006 is the Scientific Director of the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale Tumori of Milan. He is also the Scientific Secretary of Alleanza Contro il Cancro since 2006.
In 1979 to 1980 Professor Pierotti completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the Laboratory of Viral Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Institute, New York. From 1985-1991, he was appointed Vice-Director of the Division of Experimental Oncology at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori (INT) of Milan. From 1991 to 1999 he held the position as Director of the same Division and from 1999 to 2006 , before of being appointed Scientific Director of INT, he also held the position of Director of the Department of Experimental Oncology.
He presently holds a number of prominent positions, including the Group leader of Cancer Genetic Group at Istituto FIRC on Molecular Oncology (IFOM, since 2000), Member of the Ethics Committee of the Foundation IRCCS “Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori” in Milan. Dr. Pierotti is also a member of the Advisory Board of Italian Association on Cancer Research (AIRC) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Laboratory Research Awards Selection Committee (AACR 2007-2009). Other eminent positions include Consultant to the Ministries of Research of different countries, including The Netherlands, Finland and Denmark, Commissioner of the Commissione Centrale di Beneficenza of the CARIPLO Foundation, President of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) for the years 2008-2011 and Past President of European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) for the same period , as well as being scientific responsible for the Project of the Lombardy Oncological Network (ROL).
Professor Pierotti’s work has been recognized through a number of academic awards and honours including the ‘International Idea Award’ for Health in 2001 and the ‘Una vita per la ricerca’ ABO Project Award in 2008.
He is author of over 400 publications on various aspects of experimental oncology including studies on immunology, biochemistry and molecular biology, using both experimental and human tumors including a contribution to a chapter on Oncogenes in the most widespread handbook on Oncology in the United States (Cancer Sciences).
