His research programs investigate environmental contamination of aerosols, dust, sediment, soil and water, and risks to human health. His work focuses on mining and smelting emissions and deposition, as well as pollution in urban environments. In recent years, he has examined bees, sparrows, lichens and wildfire ash for lead and other contaminants. His most recent paper examines atmospheric trace metal emissions from wildfires. His work also includes "The Human Environment," including analyses of children's blood lead levels, wine, honey, residential vegetable patches, household dust, lead levels in drinking water, and the effect of early lead exposure on aggressive crime rates.
