Rainer Martini (M'99) was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1969. He received the Diploma degree in physics from the University of Bonn, Bonn, in 1995, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from Rheinisch-Westflische Technische Hochschule Aachen, Aachen, Germany, in 1999. His studies focused on the amplification of far-infrared (terahertz) emission from impulsively excited semiconductor heterostructures, especially concerning Bloch oscillations as tunable frequency sources.
He entered a joint research program with Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, Murray Hill, NJ, in 1999, and Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ, where he worked on high-speed modulation and communication application of quantum cascade lasers. He was an Assistant Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology from August 2001 to August 2008. Since September 2008, he has been an Associate Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology. His current research interests include ultrafast switching devices based on semiconductors and semiconductor heterostructures, ultrafast laser sources (100 fs and below) and their applications in spectroscopy, communication, material testing, generation, detection, and applications of time-resolved terahertz (100–5000 GHz) radiation, free space optical communication using new wavelength (infrared) as well as ultrashort pulses, infrared laser communication at ultrahigh speed, and infrared camera systems using new alternate approaches.
Dr. Martini is a member of the American Physical Society, the German Physical Society, the IEEE Laser and Electro-Optics Society, the New York Academy of Science, and the Optical Society of America.
