个人简介
I am a theoretical biologist working on the nature of causation in biological systems and mainly on how organisms can make creative choices. I studied Zoology at Manchester University in the 1970s and for a PhD in neuroscience from Edinburgh University. I was formerly Deputy Dean of Life Sciences at University College London and the graduate tutor at the Institute for Women's Health. I now hold a post as Honorary Associate Professor. I am a Chartered Biologist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
In 2005 I established the Collaborative Centre for Reproductive Ethics and Rights in the UCL Institute for Women’s Health. The aim was to build a unit of sub-specialists in ethics to work at the interface of clinical practice in Women’s Health and to develop an understanding of ethics in the biomedical sciences.
Issues investigated included: ethical implications of the developmental origin of adult disease reproductive health and women’s rights; ethics of reduction, refinement and replacement in the use of animals in biomedical research; choice in reproduction; the impact of advances in reproductive medicine on the role of parents and parental rights; issues of informed consent arising in preimplantation genetic diagnosis, fetal gene therapy, and early menopause and cancer risks.
In 2007/8 with British Council UKIERI funding, we established in India a short course in medical ethics and carried out pilot research with focus groups of women attending community clinics in rural Andhra Pradesh investigating views on informed consent and confidentiality and their impact on health care access.
In the 1970s and 1980s, in collaboration with Alan Brown and others in Edinburgh, we were the first to record and label identified somatosensory neurones and map their organisation in the spinal cord. We were also able to demonstrate the relationship between receptive field organisation and sensory processing, revealing the interplay between excitatory and inhibitory neurones in the primary processing of sensory inputs.
Breathing in the newborn: In the late 1980s and 1990s, my team worked on the control of breathing in the newborn, demonstrating the existence of an inhibitory pathway involved in the suppression of breathing in the newborn during hypoxia.
