Rob Lees graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2014 with a first class honours degree in Biochemistry (M.Sci.). In his final year he completed a project under the supervision of Dr Joshua Rappoport using live-cell TIRF microscopy to investigate the trafficking of epidermal growth factor receptor during chemotactic invasion of metastatic breast cancer cells.
Rob commenced a 4-Year PhD programme funded by the Wellcome Trust at the University of Bristol in Oct 2014. In his first year he completed three rotation projects: the first with Dr Jon Lane investigating the role of SIGMAR1 in autophagy, the second with Dr Nina Balthasar investigating the potential neuroprotective role of SIRT3 and third with Dr Michael Ashby/Dr Paul Verkade developing a method to relocate a region of interest in whole tissue for correlative light and electron microscopy. He began his PhD work in Dr Michael Ashby's lab in Oct 2015 to investigate the role of mitochondria during synaptic formation, stabilisation and elimination.
Rob secured a position in Adam Packer's lab at the University of Oxford as a postdoctoral research assistant from Oct 2018 to Feb 2022. There, he researched functional connectivity in the mouse neocortex using all-optical techniques (calcium imaging and targeted holographic photostimulation). As well as this, Rob contributed towards improvements in multiphoton microscope development and standardisation of protocols to characterise multiphoton microscope performance.
Rob is now working as a Microscopy Link Scientist at the Central Laser Facility, Harwell, UK. He is the lead microscopist for the development of lightsheet techniques at the facility.
