个人简介
Stefan Hild is a Professor of Experimental Physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow.
He supervises 9 PhD students (6 as 1st supervisor) and 6 Postdoctoral Research Assistants (3 as 1st supervisor). His core
research focuses on advanced laser interferometry techniques for gravitational wave detection, with special emphasis on
quantum noise and novel concepts for measurements beyond the quantum limit. Funded by the European Research
Council (ERC) Stefan heads a team to proof the concept of a new interferometer topology, so-called ‘speed meters’, which
potentially allows evading back action noise. Moreover, he is one of the key contributors to the European Einstein
Telescope, he has been leading an international team of about 50 scientists charged with developing upgrade strategies
for Advanced LIGO and he serves as Scientific Coordinator of the worlds first ‘International Max Planck Partnership
(IMPP)’, a collaboration of the physics departments of 5 Scottish Universities and 5 Max Planck Institutes in Germany.
Outside his core area, Stefan also carries out research on renewable energy sources, energy storage and demand side
control techniques. Funded by Historic Scotland, he recently started to apply laser interferometry to better understand the
climate change driven decay of sandstone buildings. Moreover, Stefan is the Convenor of the Graduate School Committee
(equivalent to Head of Graduate School) for Physics and Astronomy at the University of Glasgow.
