Sharon Marie Weldon is a Professor in Healthcare Simulation and Workforce Development at the University of Greenwich. She leads the Centre for Professional Workforce Development and the Simulation Group, and is Deputy Head for Research and Enterprise in the School of Health Sciences, as well as section lead for research and advancing clinical practice. She holds honorary positions with Imperial College London and Barts Health NHS Trust.
Sharon is a registered general nurse with experience in emergency and trauma paediatric operating theatres, of a variety of surgical procedures ranging from general and ophthalmic, to orthopaedics and plastics. Sharon has specialised as an infectious disease nurse working in a specialised unit and clinic, a Ugandan hospital and for the Health Protection Agency (now Public Health England), whilst further specialising in TB and HIV.
Whilst practicing nursing, she completed a Masters at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Public Health, with a particular emphasis on global health, health economics, disease epidemiology and diagnostic tests sensitivity and specificity. Following this her research focus changed to communication and innovative uses of simulation. She completed a PhD with Imperial College London that used theoretical and empirical data to generate a conceptual and process model relating to a novel form of simulation termed Sequential Simulation (SqS).
Her research now mainly focuses on simulation (specifically transformative simulation and sequential simulation), communication, teamwork, and workforce development. She collaborates widely and uses a range of methodologies to address her research questions and to generate impact in practice
She has been awarded several grants to date including a Wellcome Trust People Award; an Economic and Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Award x 2; a Royal College of Nursing Foundation award, An Arts and Humanities Research Council Award, Health Education England funding, and internal funding awards from Imperial College London and the University of Greenwich.
Sharon currently teaches observational research and Sequential Simulation (SqS) for the Masters in Surgical Education and Surgical Innovation courses at Imperial College London; communication in the operating theatre to post-graduate students at South Bank University; and research methods and ethics to healthcare post-graduate student at Barts Health NHS Trust and the University of Greenwich. She supervisors several PhD candidates in areas of public health, simulation, workforce development, and communication.
In 2016, Sharon was awarded the Imperial College Global Health Scholarship. This is a highly competitive award given by Imperial College to selected researchers to participate in a global health summer school in Cape Town, South Africa. This award provided Sharon with an opportunity to meet international researchers with the aim of coming together to problem solve global health challenges.
Other research she has conducted includes an Economic and Social Research Council funded project “Transient Teams in the Operating Theatre” also at Imperial College London. This project examined communication between operating theatre staff through audio and video recordings. It addressed strengths and weaknesses in teamwork and built on this to create future training programmes and organisational change. This research resulted in significant outputs including major media interest across the world. As a result, Sharon was interviewed across various television and radio platforms nationally and internationally, including BBC World News, BBC Breakfast & the Today show as well as others.
In her current capacity, Sharon sits on the University of Greenwich’s Faculty Research and Enterprise Committee; the Faculty Ethics Review Committee and the Health Research Authority Ethics Committee; and is a Clinical Network Facilitator for the Association of UK University Hospitals. She is an associate editor for the International Journal of Healthcare Simulation (IJoHS), and is on the editorial board for the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice, and the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Simulation & Technology Enhanced Learning (STEL), as well as regularly reviewing papers for many other journals on an ad-hoc basis.
