I am an internationally recognised expert in the fields of mammary gland biology and breast cancer, as well as an experienced University Teacher with strong expertise in developing and running postgraduate degree programmes in Cancer Sciences and Molecular Medicine.
My widely published research assesses the molecular and cellular changes that occur during mammary gland development, and how processes that control the key developmental changes may be used and deregulated during breast cancer progression. The current work focusses on how mammary epithelial ductal growth is facilitated and controlled during puberty and pregnancy in the mouse by epithelial and mesenchymal factors. This has led to the discovery of a novel RNA-based biomarker for metastatic spread in human breast cancer. We are now taking this into the veterinary field to develop methods for canine mammary cancer diagnostics.
