Stephanie is a dedicated researcher who recently completed her PhD at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), focusing on investigating the safety and effectiveness of exercise in Systemic Sclerosis (or scleroderma) and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Her research has yielded impressive results, including the publication of six journal articles, an oral presentation at the Australian Rheumatology Association 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting (where she won a travel award for best oral abstract), and numerous presentations at Scleroderma advocacy groups. Stephanie's research has also had considerable impact to policy and practice, including authoring: 1) Exercise is Medicine Australia's factsheets for people with Autoimmune Disease, 2) Exercise and Sport Science Australia professional development webinar on Exercise for people with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and Exercise for people with Scleroderma, 3) BJC virtual educational webinar on Exercise for people with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and 4) Scleroderma Australia Virtual Education session on Exercise and Physical activity for people with Scleroderma. As an early career researcher, Stephanie has demonstrated her leadership and supervisory skills by successfully guiding two UniSQ honors research students to completion. Currently, she is supervising six medical doctors in their rheumatology-related research programs, and two consumer research partners, showcasing her ability to mentor and guide researchers across different disciplines and with people with lived experience. Additionally, Stephanie has collaborated with international authors on a Cochrane systematic review, further demonstrating her commitment to knowledge dissemination and global collaboration.
Stephanie's passion for autoimmune disease research stems from personal experiences with Systemic Sclerosis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, affecting both herself and her mother. With a decade of clinical experience as an accredited exercise physiologist, Stephanie serves as the managing director of Immune Exercise Physiology, a thriving business specializing in telehealth and in-home exercise prescription for individuals living with autoimmune and chronic diseases. She actively engages with the community as a committee member for Scleroderma NSW, delivering presentations and advocating for the importance of exercise. Stephanie is also a sought-after speaker at conferences and seminars, where she shares her expertise and contributes to the advancement of autoimmune disease research and management.
In her current role as research manager for the Rheumatology department at Liverpool Hospital, Stephanie oversees multiple research projects, guides grant and ethics applications, and mentors advanced rheumatology trainees and medical students in research design. Notably, she played an instrumental role in the conceptual design of a multidisciplinary clinic for scleroderma at Liverpool Hospital, incorporating exercise testing and delivery by physiotherapists. This innovative approach ensures comprehensive and holistic care for individuals with scleroderma, bridging the gap between research and clinical practice to enhance patient outcomes and quality of life.
Stephanie's unwavering dedication to autoimmune disease research, her expertise in exercise physiology, her impactful contributions to academia, and her commitment to person-centered care make her a highly respected and influential figure in the field.
