Stephen Fraser is a structural geologist with interests, knowledge and skills in both the minerals exploration and mining domains. After time spent with Thiess Bros (Bowen Basin) and Zinc Corp (Broken Hill) as an undergraduate, Stephen worked for Riofinex (Saudi Arabia), CRA Exploration (Western Australia) and CSR Ltd (Queensland and Indonesia) before joining the CSIRO Remote Sensing Group led by Drs Jon Huntington and Andy Green at North Ryde (Sydney) in1984.
Stephen has capabilities in the areas of airborne and down-hole geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing (mineral mapping) and in the display, interpretation and storage of spatially-located geoscientific data. His data analysis and interpretation skills led him to identify the opportunity to co-develop (with Dr Bruce Dickson) and commercialize a data mining and visualisation software package (SiroSOM), specifically to assist geoscientists with the integrated analysis of spatially located, disparate and complex data sets. Various multinational mining companies, international geological survey organizations and universities hold SiroSOM licences. As an indication of the wider applicability of SiroSOM, Stephen recently co-authored a refereed journal paper on the use of SOM for the detection and delineation of brain lesions on human magnetic resonance imagery.
Stephen’s interest in the integrated analysis of geophysics and geochemistry, led him to champion the opportunity and canvas industry support to develop next-generation elemental logging tools using nuclear methods. Elemental data gathered at a spatial frequency equivalent to petrophysical property information collected. by. other logging methods within a borehole. Stephen led the project, which, included collaboration with. French company Sodern (an Airbus subsidiary) that delivered a Proto-type NAA logging tool to BHP Iron Ore (TRL7) in 2012.
In the 2003, Stephen and fellow CSIRO co-workers realized that a mine’s overall efficiency and productivity could be improved, if critical, “single-source of truth” information could be seamlessly shared across the value chain within a mining operation. This realization emphasized the need to track and understand how the characteristics of material in the in-situ, resource model performed during extraction and processing. This vision, the “Common Mine Model”, is now being realized through adoption of communication and data exchange standards, the realization that mining can be considered a factory process, and the sensing requirements for telerobotic and autonomous operations (The Internet of Mining Things and Industry 4.0).
Stephen has presented at numerous university and industry short courses in the areas of remote sensing, geophysical interpretation and data analysis; given invited keynote conference presentations on sensing, data analysis and concepts related to the Common Mine Model; and has also co-supervised various PhD, MSc and Honours students.
