Xuezhi Yang (SM'12) received the B.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Tsinghua
University, Beijing, China, in 1993 and 1998, respectively.
In 1998, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Peking University, Beijing. During 2000–2012, he was a
Researcher in wireless communications with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. He has drafted over 40 patents, with over 30 of
them being granted in China, the United States, and Europe. He developed a novel frequency-domain joint detection
algorithm for TD-SCDMA, which proved to be the most efficient among commercially feasible algorithms. He proposed a
random beamforming technology utilized in the broadcast channel of multiantenna systems, improving the spectrum
efficiency, power amplifier utilization, and robustness to RF chain failures. He presented the seminal “soft
frequency reuse” concept to 3GPP LTE in 2005, which later became the benchmark technology of intercell
interference coordination and was widely used in cellular systems. He proposed the idea to unify the sample frequency
and FFT size for all bandwidth and to transmit several carriers in one big IFFT for LTE in 2005, which greatly
simplified the transmitter structure and lowered the cost of LTE industry. He extended the “soft frequency
reuse” concept to “multilevel soft frequency reuse” in December 2013, which further improved the cell
edge data rate for cellular systems.
